We have Apple TV and Netflix, along with Hulu Plus. So, we watch older shows on Netflix (Dr Who, Modern Family, etc), and catch up with newer episodes on Hulu. Sometimes, like the newest Dr. Who season, we buy it on Apple TV.

I also use a proxy server (I use HMA, which stands for Hide My A**), and others here use TunnelBear. This allows you to watch shows that are blacked out here or shown at a different time, such as Downton Abbey, Sherlock, the Olympics, etc. I use it a lot for tennis matches, also.

Some things - things from HBO for example - you just can't get except on DVD and you have to wait. No way around it. But we buy a few things from Amazon. When we ditched the cable, we got Hulu Plus (we already had Netflix) and I vowed to just splurge on the cost of the shows on Amazon since buying a season of Doctor Who on Amazon is still massively cheaper than cable.

That's what we do. We have a Roku box and ditched DirecTV. If it's not on Netflix, Hulu Plus, or free on Amazon (we're Prime members) we buy the season from Amazon. We can buy a whole season of several shows for less than we paid for a month of satellite. We decided it's worth it for the shows we don't want to wait for.
