Kilgallon

I know Kilgallon has been discussed in depth here, but I have searched and can only come up with one thread.

Would someone just tell me which Kilgallon for an 8th grader, who speaks very well but has hardly had any formal grammar study? Could you also tell me if Kilgallon is enough on its own for grammar?

Killgallon is applied grammar/sentence writing and IMHO best done with a child who is familiar with the parts of speech, types of phrases, and clauses.

My oldest did Story Grammar before Michael Clay Thompson's (MCT) "town" level and Grammar for Middle School after. She had a lot easier a time with the 2nd Killgallon book after mastering the various grammatical terms through MCT. With Story Grammar she had to do a lot of trial-and-error to make her imitations match the structure of the model sentences. After MCT "town", she could easily identify gerunds, infinitives, participles, etc. in the model sentences as such and generally was able to get her imitations right on the first try.

With my 2nd child, I plan to start Killgallon's Sentence Composing for Elementary School after he finishes MCT Grammar Town.

Here are some other threads discussing Killgallon FYI. I know there are more out there but I'm not having much luck with the new search function.

If you had to give a grade level to this book, what would you say? I was thinking about using some of it next year, but we will not have done any formal grammar. Perhaps I should wait another year until 3rd or 4th??

I have a 5th grader who's using it, and I'd say she's struggling a bit, but just the right amount for my comfort. I don't think I'd use it with a 3rd or 4th grader unless they had a really, really good grasp of some of the finer points of grammar. JMO, of course!

You might want to look at Story Grammar instead based on what Crimson Wife said above, but I have no personal experience with that one.

Thank you! That just saved me a bit a money.

Yes, I would recommend waiting until the child is working at about a 4th or 5th grade level in LA. LA is my DD's strongest subject so she was on the younger side, but I would think most 7-to-8 y.o.'s would find it overly challenging.
