I.Dup. Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 We may have a chance to move to Corpus Christie. Dh spent some time in Grand Prairie this spring and had a horrible allergic reaction (swollen, itchy eyes, sinus problems, etc). I'm wondering if he is going to be this way all over TX or only in that one area? Can anyone tell me about Corpus Christie? We are ultimately looking to move to FL to be near his parents, right now we are about as far away as you can get in the U.S. in WA state. Do you think moving to Corpus Christie would be beneficial- we'd still be a 15 hour drive from them. WWYD? Quote
TexasRachel Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Well the first thing you need to consider is that Grand Prairie is about 8 hours away from Corpus Christi. So allergies would be different. We do have allergies, but not as much as other places. My mom has horrible allergies, but does ok here. She still has them, but they are manageable. We love it here. It's currently 70*. We have decent beaches. Not world class, but better than Washington. I have family that when they come down from Seattle they just want to sit on the beach. We have a low COL and we didn't get hit with the housing bust like most states. My DH works for the govt in a guaranteed job, but I don't personally know of anyone who has been laid of in the past few years. I know of people who are working in less than ideal jobs to them, but everyone I know of seems to be doing ok. We have a growing homeschooling community. I live about 30 min outside of Corpus so I don't really go to any of the activities. August is miserable, but it's a trade off for not having a winter. We love it here. Quote
I.Dup. Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 Thank you for the info! What do you love most about it? Is it really only very hot for one month? My dh has never had allergies anywhere else, is there a certain thing in the air that bothers people? Quote
StartingOver Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Corpus is way south of Grand Prairie, it is much dryer up there. My son does have some issues with allergies, but only when the cold fronts hit and they are mild. Corpus is hot for me!! Way hot. But I am peri-menopausal, so anything over 80 is misery for me. Good areas to look for housing here are in Portland, Calallen, or Rockport. The places to avoid are Robstown, Sinton, Taft, Odem, and Aransas Pass( there are good folks in Aransas Pass, but the area is not as good as it once was. ) The drive from Corpus Christi to FL is not a bad one, it is all coastal and pretty. What more would you like to know ? I love Portland personally, there are 13 parks for kids, we are just across the bridge from the Museums, Aquarium, Art Center, and have a fantastic pool, and Community Center. Yet close enough to the beach, and shopping to get there in under 30 minutes. Quote

In GP, he could have been having allergic reactions to grass, Oak, or Cedar (Juniper), but the pollen from those isn't quite as abundant in Corpus. The climate is pretty similar to Florida. No seasons. It's packed w/ tourists in the summer, but it's a beach town, so you kind of have to expect that. Quote
