itsheresomewhere
The writer of Downtown Abby has written an american version. It will take place in early New York. NBC is has reported picked it up and it could be on tv in fall 2013. This was on the Today show earlier this morning. I think this sounds really neat. momofkhm
I'm sure my daughters won't like it. It's not British. They won't have accents. I will enjoy it though. Of course by the time it comes out, my British tv snob will be off at college.
LisaKinVA
I don't know... "Americanized" versions of British shows just seem to lose something in translation. I think part of the fascination with Downton Abbey is that the lifestyle (aristocrats, servants, huge estates) is just so foreign to most of the US population. While NY had it's wealthy society, it just seems to pale in comparison to the dreamy aspect of jolly old England. I wonder if they will get Shirley McLane to play in it ;) She portrays "New American Money" quite well on Downton Abbey.
Susan in TN
It could be really well done. I've noticed that sometimes when I see a British show that has an American counterpart, I actually like the American version better ( at least at first) because a lot of the British humor and references are lost on me. I haven't seen much British TV though (love Sherlock and Monty Python), and have never actually watched Downton Abby (we lost our PBS station somewhere along the line.) milovany
Ahem. Watch the following video: http://thefw.com/downton-arbys/ Scroll down to the video, bear with the Prilosec commercial, and then pay close attention to the conversation beginning at about 1:35. Lose the 2nd "w" :D

Slartibartfast
I don't think it is necessarily the aristocratic themes that are missing in American programming. Many times the writing just isn't as good. We love Top Gear on the BBC. It is ridiculous but I admit nothing in the world makes me laugh as hard as that show. It is funny, I never thought I would enjoy a car show so much but it leaves me rolling on the ground in stitches. I have made an UNREAL number of people watch the show because it is THAT hilarious! They made an American version and it is just dull. They bought used cars to drive on glaciers, when their cars broke down they took the replacement car. WHAT!! WHAT IS THAT!?! One does not take replacement cars!! And they are not funny. I have tried to watch it and I did not even crack a smile. BBC makes Sherlock. It is excellent. Elementary is American. It is fail. BBC Makes Doctor Who. There isn't even a comparable show on American television atm. There are no good, family-friendly, sci-fi programs on American TV atm. NOT EVEN A STAR TREK!! HOW COULD YOU! I might watch quite a few British show on netflix but I *rarely* enjoy the American counterpart as much. Why even make two separate versions? We are speaking the same language! BBC makes Downton Abbey, sure I would give an American version a shot, particularly if it is the same writer. I hate reality shows (except Top Chef...and sometimes Crab Show) We used to have good TV. :(
Beth in TN
I agree with LisaK and Sis about the American version of British shows not being the same quality. It's disappointing but doesn't stop me from trying them out anyway.
Lady Florida.
BBC makes Sherlock. It is excellent. Elementary is American. It is fail. I agree with you for the most part, but Elementary is growing on us. It's nowhere near the level of Sherlock, but it's not a total fail IMO. I have to thank Netflix and The Hive for introducing me to most of the British shows I now love.

ChrisB
I'll have to try Sherlock because I really enjoy Elementary. It is one of my favorites from this fall's newbies.

Word Nerd
This won't necessarily be an Americanized version of Downton Abbey just because Julian Fellowes is writing it. Here's a story about The Gilded Age.

Here's a story about The Gilded Age. Well...I would prefer it to have a different storyline that will hold its own weight next to the British version. I don't want to watch the same show twice. (I sometimes watch the same show twice :()
