TeachingMyTwo
I really admire the memory masters of Classical Conversations, but for a number of reasons we will not be enrolling the kids. I came across this blog http://satorismiles....ation-timeline/ and fell in love with the timeline. Has anyone here done a timeline memorization with their kids similar to CC using something like this as the outline? Should I consider anything specific before attempting this or do you have any words of wisdom? It won't be for a while, but I want to have all of my ducks in a row. Thanks! http://www.pandiapress.com/?page_id=58 Edited to Add: I read the WTM when my kids were a bit younger and I do not remember a timeline for memorization being included, but maybe I overlooked it? Forgive me if there is one in there already, I need to buy my own copy soon as I only borrowed from the library last time.
amselby81
Do you have a problem with CC's timeline, or is it that you just don't want to join a community? If you like the timeline, you can order the CD. There's a wonderful song to go with CC's timeline. You can even order the cards. I have no experience with other timelines, so I really don't have any other advice. All I know is that b/c of the song, I have almost all of CC's timeline memorized. My 6 year old has some of it memorized.
Amy Jo
When I last checked the timeline cards (the only product I saw) were very expensive. Anyway, you might get ideas here: http://www.classical-homeschooling.org/celoop/history.html or find the grammar stage memory book that Hannah (I think?) made - it has a timeline based on SOTW. CHOW also has a stair of time, and the older edition had a timeline in list form (the newer one does not).
amselby81
The cards are pretty expensive. There are 4 sets, and they cost about $20 per set. You can actually buy just the song. You can buy just parts of the song, or the entire song for $8. The cards are nice, but we really don't refer to them much. Here's the link to the song: http://www.classical...acfahitiso.html ETA that the cards ARE nice. We just don't refer to them much b/c my daughter is still pretty young. I've tried to read the cards to her, and she gets bored. But we do play games with them where I put 7 out at a time and mix them up, then I have her put them in the correct order. We'll get lots of use from the cards. Even if we decide to stop CC, I'm going to continue to use them. Here's the link to the cards, just in case you're interested. http://www.classical...acandfahic.html
TeachingMyTwo
Yeah, the group is not for us. I may consider their version in the end if it's much simpler, but I really like the idea of one that coincides with SOTW! That sounds ideal. http://www.theevolvinghomemaker.com/tag/the-story-of-the-world-timeline-cards/ I found these cards and they are great, but the blog they were linked from was taken down and I can't seem to find them elsewhere. :( I'll keep looking though. I did find the grammar memory book, so thank you for that idea!
tullyfamily
I have the VP cards and old CC CDs... Do they have a history song? I missed it if they do! Also, have the titles changed for the new CC history cards?

mazakaal
I'm doing the timeline memorization with my kids right now, but we're not going to CC meetings at all. I got half of the CC cards and the binder (because I also want them to memorize the history sentences, math facts, and science sentences). They're a lot of money, but I think it was worth it. The visual has been helpful, and I also have the kids mix up the cards and put them back into order. We also do the hand motions that I found on a youtube video. We'll get the other half of the cards next year to memorize the rest of the timeline.
amselby81
I have the VP cards and old CC CDs... Do they have a history song? I missed it if they do! Also, have the titles changed for the new CC history cards? CC came out with their own cards this year. The problem with the VP cards was that CC ran into copyright issues, and couldn't list the card names anywhere, or create a song with them. Now that CC has their own cards, they are able to include the card names on their CD's, in the Foundations guide, and they were able to make a song for it. The cards are not the same as the VP cards. I like them better. I say that after I bought all of the VP cards last year, only to find out that I they would be obsolete this year. I was pretty upset at first, but I quickly got over it when I received the cards and listened to the song. Why do I like them better? For one thing, I like them better b/c the VP cards focuses more on the western hemisphere (mainly the US) after the founding of the US. The CC cards stay pretty balanced and cover more world history (ex. Australia Becomes a Commonwealth, Lenin and the Bolshevik Revolution, Fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, etc), . There are also more cards for the 20th century.
arghmatey
I don't believe VP published a song, but you can find some on YouTube (in the order CC used the cards, not in the order VP places the cards). Search for "CC Timeline Song", "Veritas Press Timeline Song", and other similar terms. I have an MP3 and no YouTube links. Sorry!
laughing lioness
How to Memorize a Timeline is pretty simplistic but might help get your started.
Angie in VA
VP has cds of songs. http://www.veritaspress.com/prodinfo.asp?number=000001 CC used the VP cards in a different order, so CC didn't use the VP songs (as far as I know, I was never in a community). Now CC has its own history cards and songs. VP has Bible cards and songs too.
Paula in MS
The new CC timeline is awesome. You can download the mp3 of the timeline song from the Classical Conversstions bookstore if you don't want to order the set of CDs. http://www.classicalconversationsbooks.com/clacfahitiso.html

I did find the grammar memory book, so thank you for that idea! The Story of the World is one of the sources for the CC timeline. The real draw of this particular timeline is the song which makes things so much easier. You are starting earlier than I did, though, so you have more time to commit things to memory. The book Living Memory by Andrew Campbell has a timeline listed. You could use this as a reference and just pick and choose the facts to memorize.
