momsuz123
What online classes are out there for an 8 y/o that is needing more? She has so many interests; sharks, Greek mythology, etc. Thanks. I really need to find some outlets for her asap.
Bang!Zoom!
Mom, there are all sorts of materials out there...competitions, Yale courses- syllabus registers; really not an exhaustible topic of study. If you give a brief sketch of the things she is handling at the moment, I'm sure a lot of folks with jump in with next-level ideas. Would you mind talking a little about the things she is doing right now? How much time are you spending on it? What are her comfortable reading titles right now? Are you looking for project-based, book, film, full-courses for a year, anything a little more specific?

Are you looking for project-based, book, film, full-courses for a year, anything a little more specific? Sorry, honestly I am still trying to wrap my head around all of this. We are in our second year homeschooling - she is jumping academically faster than I can keep up. I didn't know she was gifted until this year. She is my oldest, and my second one is stuggling (mild APD, we think). Things were going along good, until recently, she emotionally is a trainwreck. It is almost like she made huge gains academically, while regressing emotionally. I just had her tested by a psychologist yesterday. We meet next week to go over all the results. The doctor did tell me that in one tested in particular, my dd mastered every question to the level of a 16 y/o, then they stopped. I am not saying this to "brag", but to give an idea of my dd. Right now I am at the struggling point of realizing I have a gifted child that is really challenging me to truly find her "gift" Okay, she loves reading, especially nonfiction. Which is good, because at 8 we start to get into issues with content. She just read The Odyssey, and is now reading Little Women. She loves Greek Mythology, just loves it. I just read Lori Pickert's book on Project Based Homeschooling. My dd wants to learn all about history through her American Girl Dolls. She wants to learn how to sew to even make period type clothes. My mom is willing to teach her the sewing machine, and then let my dd have at it. She is huge into animals. Around here, she can't volunteer at any shelters or anything until 12 or 13. We do have 3 dogs, and I bought Amanda Bennnet's Dogs unit. We are working our way through that. She loves Ancient History/civilizations. Math is weird, she kind of makes this jumps in it. Needs some help one week, then makes a big jump. Now we are just doing the Chapter tests in Math Mammoth to see where she needs help. She reads LOF elementary to her dolls, she also has Beast Academy. Writing, well, probably her weakness. I just ordered Bravewriter. We were doing WWE. I liked it, she was bored. I backed way off of writing last school year because she had some vision issues (tried to turn her head to see the world with one eye, missed little words when reading, etc) She did great with VT, so now I want to get back into reading. She loves dreambox, does it outloud with her dolls. Auditory is her huge strength. She will read all my teacher's manuals to her dolls, daily. Grammar, MCT. Although I bought Grammaropolis to have it be a different "fun" way of going through Grammar, and quite frankly I feel like I was drowning with what to do with her. I found Athena's Academy (from you all, thank you). I also found through Real Science 4 kids an online course regarding sharks. She loves sharks. I need to get going with my other dd more, who really needs more help than I am giving her. Oh, my dd loves musical theater, and is really excelling at it (except for the dance part, cuz you know, it requires that other side of the brain - at least, i think it does). She just got done performing Annie Jr. in front of hundreds of people a night, and loved every minute of it. She memorized the 61 page script in 2 weeks. She loves reader's theater. We have checked out every readers theater book in the library system 3x now. (I got her some for Christmas). In addition to her theater class 1x/week, she is now in private lessons too, she just loves it. We don't spend much or enough time in school. Math for maybe 45 minutes, reading she just does on her own, sometimes outloud with me, that is at least 1 hour/day. I would guess we average 2 hours/day of school. But I don't feel like she has learned anything new this year, at least not from me. That is not good, and why I need help. Thanks. Whew. I would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks for letting me say things on here I can't say on FB to make it easier.

SunshineMom
Just wanted to add that I can totally relate to the struggle of handling multiple interests. I have finally figured out a schedule that incorporates my dd's interests as well as what I feel needs to get done yet scheduling enough time for it all has been difficult. I would just caution you to be careful with how much you add into your schedule. We have found classes within our community that have also provided challenges, as well as a social outlet. 3andme
Athena's Advanced Academy and Onlineg3 have courses that might be suitable. Currclick offers a wide variety of online clubs and classes. Memoria Press has some Latin and Mythology classes for that age group. Veritas Press has both live and self-paced history classes. LPH offers a selection of inexpensive courses for 4th - 8th graders QSL has electronics courses for 8 yo and up
