TXMary2
Austin Community College in Texas, is offering a degree in "Social Media." I am not sure what I think of this yet, but I lean towards it being silly. The report I heard on the radio said the courswork would mostly be about learning to write. Don't we already have degrees with that focus? Apparently, there is a special skill set needed for writing on FB and Twitter. :/ http://www.kxan.com/dpp/news/local/austin/ACC-offering-social-media-degree
Chava_Raizel
So it's basically a marketing degree - I guess "social media" just sounds more modern.
Momof3littles
So it's basically a marketing degree - I guess "social media" just sounds more modern. That's what I was thinking. My DH is a PhD scientist, and does some marketing as part of his job. He's had to read and learn a lot about using social media in terms of marketing, since he is foremost a scientist, and marketing is one part of his professional duties. We don't even have FB accounts of our own, LOL. So his co. now tweets, blogs, has a presence on FB, etc. I could see it being a useful 2nd degree for some fields too. TXMary2
Good points. I just thought it sounded kind of silly. "What's your major?" "Facebooking."
Big Buckin' Longhorn
I saw it on the ACC homepage a few days ago and thought it was silly, but now that I hear a few posters' input, I guess it does have some merit. Still . . . I don't know, LOL.
Slartibartfast
It sounds like a specialized communications degree. I could see it incorporating corporate messaging, marketing, public relations, etc. :iagree: That would fall within marketing/communications. I know there are jobs out there for this but...I dunno. It does sound very specialized.
redheadmom
I run my own very small service business and can't tell you how many ebooks, seminars, and classes I take to stay on top of social media marketing. It is very different than traditional marketing and advertising. Would be good as a minor to a marketing or advertising degree.

lamppost
Well there are jobs like "Social Media Director" that already exist, so I guess it makes sense that colleges would want to offer it as a major.
