Blessed with seven
Okay..I am new to all of these tablet things. I got a regular Kindle Fire because it was $30 off, then I read where the HD gets so much better streaming etc.. I will mainly be using for kids books, kids shows and games probably. Streaming videos on occassion. We live in the country and get pretty good reception, we are wireless but sometimes the computer gets slow and the streaming will be interrupted, not for a long time, like it used to. I used to not be able to stream at all, then we upgraded but we are still in the country and it can cut out some. Would the HD be better to get or not? Thanks! StartingOver
The new HD will be better quality for video as it is HD, although the Fire is great. The reason I am getting the HD, is because you can log in different members of your family, sort books better, there is a time limit feature you can set for the kids, and the speakers are much better. The Fire has been annoying when it was reset, or when it needed to be replaced and every single book ( over 5000) ended up on my carousel, so I had to sort them back out. The speakers aren't near as good as I would like. There is no time limit on the kids, and our shelves are just there so there is no way to sort books at all. There is parental controls for the wifi, videos, and etc.
nmoira
If you're absolutely sold on going Kindle and the difference in cost isn't a huge issue for you, get the HD. Amazon doesn't upgrade the underlying OS (a forked and heavily customized version of Android) past the model's shelf life. The HD has a better display, better hardware, benefits from numerous enhancements to Amazon's skin, and is built on a more recent version of Android than the old Fires. Corraleno
The reason I am getting the HD, is because you can log in different members of your family, sort books better, there is a time limit feature you can set for the kids :iagree: I already had a Kindle Fire, but I bought an HD specifically for the parental control app, called FreeTime. I can set up an account for each of my kids, and control who has access to which ebooks, audiobooks, apps, etc. — and I can set time limits for each category. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't put music in the kids' accounts, which makes no sense to me. :confused1: Jackie
Blessed with seven
Okay..now..my Kindle, just bought it, has the parental control thing, I have the new 2nd generation Kindle Fire...so..should I just keep it? You can also set it up for each child so they can only view certain books/games!
Amira
A big reason we went with HD was because it holds twice as much stuff. I know the cloud might make that a moot point for some, but I wanted more than 8gb of storage.

I have the 1st generation Fire, and I really want the HD ! If I had the 2nd generation, I probably would not upgrade just to get HD. It sounds like your 2nd Generation has the perks I want in the HD. ( I also want the better speakers, I can't hear mine in bed with the fan and the AC going. LOL ) But I am not one to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. Blessed with seven
Hmmm....speakers would be an issue BUT I have some speakers that we use for our computer that work great, I imagine I could hook those into the Kindle Fire. I am not sure about space, this would probably be used more for games and children's books, maybe some kid movies, checking emails etc..streaming videos. By the way, thank you for helping me think this through..I just am not sure how much space something takes up, I have a Kindle that I really don't use a whole lot but it can be used for books etc.. Mainly wanted this to take on car trips, for streaming videos, loading hopefully some educational games on it...

My First Generation Kindle ( 8 GB ) is about 1/2 full with 8 movies downloaded, 100 or so songs, 60 apps ( The app allotted space is 90% full, some apps are larger than others though), and 8000+ books. Blessed with seven
Okay..weird question, do your eyes hurt when you try to watch a show on the Kindle Fire? I watch shows on our computer all the time, just downloaded a show and it seemed hard to watch, maybe it is just my eyes right now..ha! I can't read outdoors in bright sun. I can adjust the brightness, but even then I can't read for hours on end like I can on the E-Ink Kindle Keyboard. And my eyes are old. I don't watch much on my Kindle Fire, but I certainly have trouble reading it. I often have the brightness way down low and will get headaches if I spend too much time reading on it. I am very thankful my DH got an e-ink Kindle, and that is what I mainly use now.
