caroljenn
Dd needs medieval history. She's done (or is doing) Ancient, and will do American next year. I need to slide Medieval history in between. She is doing MFW Ancient right now- should we stay with MFW or go to Omnibus? Any input you can give will be appreciated!! TechWife
This is our first year with MFW. DS is doing World History. I think the American History looks really good. I'm not that familiar with Omnibus, but my impression is that Omnibus has a really heavy work load. MFW is certainly high school level & has a manageable work load. I love the way they have integrated the subjects.
G5052
I'm always a fan of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." If you are happy with MFW, I'd stick with it. We're using Omnibus for the first time this year, and we'll finish high school with it. I like their choice of books and that it is very scripted. Omnibus is indeed weighty, but it depends on the kid and what level you're doing.
Candid
Are you trying to do a full year in half the year? If so, you might consider, looking at other materials that are designed for a shorter time period.
caroljenn
Yes, we are going to try to do World between Feb-Sept, more heavily June-Sept. Dd is going to start our homeschool co-op American History in September, and I need to make sure she's ready. I didn't want to skip Ancient History, and I'm hoping to get through enough history so that she's covered until the Pilgrims. She's always had work during the summer, so it's not a big deal to just have the one subject- she'll actually probably be grateful it's only one! LOL Candid, do you have any ideas for curriculum that is geared towards a shorter time frame? Or anyone else? Thanks!
Candid
First, there are probably gobs of books you could use that would cover the time period. I'd check the the WTM for suggestions for this time period. I use Tapestry which made me think that you could start with something designed to be shorter. It covers the Middle Ages in one unit and the Renaissance in another. So you could probably do either both units with maybe a minor trim of a week or two depending on your schedule OR you could just do the first unit on the Middle Ages. The only thing I would suggest is to use the lit trimming lists to help you sort out what to cover.
cbollin
what about doing Notgrass books that are part of the MFW AHL/WHL program? you could do just the history parts and get through to be just enough.. ?? -crystal
caroljenn
Jazzermom, I am thinking about letting enough be enough. And Candid, i like the idea of TOG units- thanks for that, I will check it out. I was thinking that I can use as much of MFW/Notgrass as she needs to get the majority of it done. Not 100% as great as she would have had if she had been well enough to be in this year's co-op class, but enough that she doesn't feel like a dunce when she gets there next year! Haha! It's sooooo hard when you want to do all of this fabulous stuff for your kids but don't have the time! High school would last 6 years if I had her do everything I wanted her to do!! =\
