Vocabulary from classical roots is great, but make sure they are reading, reading, reading. Some people pick it up from natural sources better than workbooks, so the workbook should be to supplement the words they are coming across when they are reading for entertainment.

Sequential spelling all the way! Don't be afraid to start at the beginning of the series--it's not too babyish. Or check out Sequential Spelling for Adults. It covers the same words, just at a faster pace. We finished SS for Adults this year (8th grade) and have moved onto Spelling Plus (at an accelerated pace)--it covers most commonly misspelled words, etc. He'll be done with that in 3 months or so and we're done officially with spelling! Sorry, I have no vocab help.

For a student who needs help with both, my hands on favorite is Marcia Henry's Words. It starts with simple spelling rules and then builds to Latin and Greek roots while still working on spelling. Since each language of origin has its own spelling patterns, that makes the spelling of even higher level words much easier.

The samples are from early on, the ending words are IMO high school level although they say 8th grade in the book.
