Please. :)

I have new-baby-brain, and I either assign too much independent reading for my 4th and 2nd graders, or not enough. They're both pretty avid readers. I'm trying to get an idea of what a reasonable list to be accomplished in a year would look like. It can include literature, history, science etc.

I have a grade 2 and 3 student and am also interested in hearing this. :)

Right now my grade 2 student isn't reading by himself. (To my knowledge he would be considered grade 1 in the USA) We just read quick books and I read all the hard words. Then if the book is to long I just read all the words to get it over with quicker. :)

His current favorites are:

Commander Toad

Ricky Ricotta

Splat the Cat

The Fly Guy

My eldest is a fine reader. My only rule for him is he has to read something every day. He has been reading the "Franny K. Stein" books. In the past three months he has also read:

Batman Super-Villians Strike by Michael Teitalbaum

Wonder Woman Power Outage by Michael Teitalbaum

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

The Adventures of Peter Cottontail by Thornton W. Burgess

Roland Wright: Future Knight by Tony Davis

Roland Wright: Brand New Page by Tony Davis

Roland Wright: At the Joust by Tony Davis

The New Kid At School by Kate McMullan

Revenge of the Dragon Lady by Kate McMullan

Class Trip to the Cave of Doom by Kate McMullan

Before that he read all the books in the Enchanted Forest Series.

He also reads graphic novels, and he even read one or two chapters of "The Hobbit" to read ahead of Daddy.

All I assign is science reading. The 4th grader reads one longer book per week (currently the Scientists in the Field series). My 2nd grader reads several picture books per week (such as Let's Read and Find Out series). The 4th grader will also read a lot throughout the day on his own. The 2nd grader doesn't normally do this, so everyone has a 20-30 minute reading time before bed.

We have required reading this year for third grade, but it's a longish list and the kids get to choose which books they read - they have to do one a month. I purposefully picked an array of books so some of them (like Jenny and the Cat Club and Tornado) are really easy while others (like The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) are harder and others are in between.

This is our list.

Just to clarify, our book basket that I made our list from up thread is free choice as well. She has to read one per month and give me an age appropriate book report. I am "assigning" the Memoria Press 2nd grade literature that goes along with their lit guides (Little House In The Big Woods, Beatrix Potter, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Charlotte's Web and The Courage of Sarah Noble but we are reading those books together. She reads them aloud first, then I reread aloud to her and then she works on completing the lit guide.
