Getting Back in the Groove...

Recommended Posts

I am only in my second year of homeschooling, so I would love some ideas/tips from some more experienced hs parents!

We are starting back with schooling after taking five days off for Thanksgiving/weekend and having grandparents in town.

My children (especially dd) really struggle getting back into the groove of school after an extra long break (and after the joy of grandparent time!). Any tips/ideas for helping everyone transition back into "school work" mode at times like this?

We seem to struggle with this any time we get our of our five day a week groove. Would love to know if anyone else deals with this and what might make it a little easier.

For us, we just jump back in. My kids do better with structure and routine anyway, so if we eased into it, it would just prolong the agony. And tomorrow is going to be crazy anyway, since we have a dentist appt. thrown in there and the cleaners come in the afternoon, so the house also has to be picked up and then we have to be out of here by 2:00.

Would a reward after school for the first few days work? Say - if we get all of our work done today, we will go to the park/pool/whatever, and get an icecream. And another interesting treat for the next day?

In reality, what I used to do after the grandparents left, and we were all a bit flat - we would have the day off, and have some cuddle time reading aloud for several hours. We always had a read-aloud on the go, but it would only be 30 mins - 1hr at a time, but times like this called for cookies, cuddles and read-aloud for 2-3hrs at a time, depending on my voice! Usually it would be enough that by the next day, we were all ready to get back into it. It was like we validated all of our feelings and flat-ness, and by doing so, got it out of our system quicker.

I was just now trying to figure out if we need to jump back in or take one more recovery day, LOL! I *think* we are easing back into the day and covering math, spelling and reading. That way I don't feel guilty and they don't feel overwhelmed. Mostly, I don't want to set up an unrealistic expectation and be frustrated when its not met.
