wapiti
I'm looking for book suggestions for leisure reading for ds9, who really really really wants The Hunger Games and nothing else. I have said no way (let me know if you disagree - or if one of the books in that series might be more acceptable than another - I haven't read any of them). The last book he read was The Maze Runner. He seems interested in dark/weird stuff (like DH). Thus far, I haven't been able to interest him in LOTR, which we have, though I'm not sure about reading level for that anyway. He doesn't read as much as I'd like, but if it's something he's into, he won't put it down. Thanks for any ideas - I have a poor track record for choosing good books that my kids are actually willing to read (several sit unread). Dana
I think I'd steer my 10yo away from Hunger Games, but I'm not sure. He did read the Gregor the Overlander series by same author and I didn't preread them... you might let your son read those.
Embassy
How about some other dystopian novels like Animal Farm?
Mukmuk
What other themes does your son like? This is the booklist DS loves, some dystopian, rather darkish and mainly sci-fi or have sarcastic humor: Artemis Fowl Skulduggery Maximum Ride Phoenix Files (dystopian) Leviathan (steampunk) Alex Rider I did read through the wiki pages on some of these books to ensure they'd be alright in terms of adult content (we had an awful incident once). My DS didn't like Hunger Games, saying it was too frightening. If anyone has other suggestions, I'd love to hear too.
TreviFive
My 9-year-old has read The Hunger Games, but I haven't, so I can't comment on its content. Mukmuk had some great suggestions, and some of my son's other favorites are: Fablehaven - Brandon Mull Inheritance - Christopher Paolini Anything by Rick Riordan The Underland Chronicles - Suzanne Collins Ranger's Apprentice - John Flanagan(all of these are fantasy/adventure) The Shadow Children - Margaret Peterson Haddix (dark and weird) The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger, Son - Lois Lowry (dark and weirder) He's getting his "very own" set of LOTR for Christmas, and I think he'll love them too. wapiti
Excellent!! Thanks for all the suggestions!!! I really appreciate the help. I can't decide whether to get his opinion or to surprise him for Christmas - maybe some of both :)
8filltheheart
I found this book http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Mystery-Suspense-Supernatural-Ready-To-Use/dp/0876289081 a while back. I think the list of books would really appeal to a boy into suspense novels. (many are too intense for my sensitive daughters. But, I don't think any of them are on par w/Hunger Games. My kids' opinion of Hunger Games is probably not the norm, though. They think the writing level is not very sophisticated and written toward a younger audience but that the younger audience would find the plot too much. No one under 13 has read Hunger Games in our household.) Here is an old post w/the list of novels. You might find several in there that your ds might really enjoy. FWIW, my ds loved the Westing Game. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/281051-interesting-resource-to-engage-the-reluctant-reader/
Lizzie in Ma
Fablehaven The Ranger's Apprentice Artemis Fowl Alex Rider Percy Jackson
Laura Corin
Alan Garner is dark/weird but I would let a 9yo (who wasn't prone to nightmares) read it. There's also Ursula le Guin. Laura
