prkerr
This is my first year homeschooling. My son is 7, second grade, and is doing Singapore Math (2B). I LOVE the strategies that it teaches but I am not sure I like the division of subjects, such as all multiplication, then fractions, then money. There is no practice of previous concepts learned. I am wondering if anyone has some other suggestions. Math is easy for him. I want a challenge, not overwhelming, yet also keep up with concepts learned. Dana
If you use the standards version, the reviews at the end of each section seem to be enough. Or you can use IP books a bit behind as review and reinforcement.
EKS
A few ideas... First, the Standards edition has regular reviews throughout each book. Instead of doing the review section all at once and moving on, I would give my son five or so problems each day from the review to do in addition to his regular work. Also, we did the CWP book from the previous year alongside the current year. But the other thing is that the order of the topics presented in the Singapore books is quite ingenious. On the surface, subsequent topics will seem to have nothing to do with previous topics, but they will actually use what was learned beautifully. So be sure to do the sections in order, because there is a reason for the order.
chepyl
He will practice multiplication in the money and measurement word problems. Previous concepts are reviewed constantly, it is just not labeled that way.
serendipitous journey
To the OP -- hello!!! and congratulations on your first homeschooling term!!! A few ideas... First, the Standards edition has regular reviews throughout each book. Instead of doing the review section all at once and moving on, I would give my son five or so problems each day from the review to do in addition to his regular work. Previous concepts are reviewed constantly, it is just not labeled that way. I agree with the two PPs about the reviews being subtly incorporated; though we've only used Singapore grade 4 & 5 materials. If you want more review, you can give the child a few problems (I write these on 1/2" lined graph paper, your son may not need that) each day or so to review the skills. I also did oral fact review each day at that level, usually the facts for one number and two operations each day (ie, one day + 9 and x9; the next, - 9 and divide-by-nine) and still do this when I'm on my game, but with more complex problems. My favorite Singapore add-on is the MathSprints, which addresses the review problem a bit. In terms of challenge, you can use the Intensive Practice books instead of the workbooks, though not all Standards topics are covered in the IPs and you will need to figure out when to assign what problems. Perhaps you could pull in IP books for the topics they have. Also, if you haven't looked at MEP, I think you might want to. It is an excellent, really extraordinary program for teaching math thinking through grade 6. It is more time-intensive and less open-and-go, I find (at least one boardie thought it wasn't any harder to teach than Singapore, but for me it definitely is). The other thing that's nice to do is add resources from livingmath.
boscopup
Exactly. Sometimes it felt like we were doing the same thing over and over and over again. I think you were. :tongue_smilie: I haven't had any problems with my son losing concepts... He sees them fairly continually with ALL those cumulative reviews (I have to skip them sometimes because they come up when we just had one... and I only do either the review in the textbook OR the review in the workbook, not both - both would be very much overkill here). And the word problems are great for reviewing (that's how Math Mammoth does review also - people sometimes complain about lack of review, but they have often not even read the word problems, which are full of review!). Crimson Wife
We do regular Singapore work M-Th and then use Fridays for review. I have my kids do the end-of-chapter reviews 1 semester behind because they are overkill when Singapore has them scheduled, but perfect review done behind. Some people use the IP's and/or the CWP's behind for this purpose but my students do them in lieu of the regular workbook so that wouldn't work for us.
