silver
I understand the idea of how to solve equations using the HOE manipulatives. Would I be able to do it with my kids using just a student book and the verbal problems book? Or is the learning system with manuals essential? What do the manuals provide? Skimming over this, I think you could teach HOE with this, the student kit, and the VP book. HOE is pretty straightforward.

The manipulatives are essential, but you can make your own. I pulled out the manuals when I had 2 students doing it and used gaming dice, paper, and Othello pieces. The manuals give you step by step guidance for each lesson, very scripted. We didn't invest in the videos but I am glad we got the manuals and manipulatives.
