Kindle vs Nook for 9 y/o who loves to read?

Recommended Posts

We bought two gently used Kindle Fires to use on a recent car trip. We then gave one of them to our son who just turned nine. We’re happy with the Kindle. If you have Amazon Prime you get one free book a month to borrow which is nice. We also have been able to find a good number of books at the library and audiobooks both from Audible.com and from the library. I didn’t research the Nook so I’m not sure about the comparison between the two.

Since it is the Fire version, I put Parental Controls on it so he can’t access the Internet without a password and he can’t do in-app purchases at all. It does have a few games on it that we loaded on which he likes. He’s a pretty follow the rules kid so we felt ok giving it to him with the understanding that he can read or listen to audiobooks all he wants but can only play games if he first asks. We really didn’t want to be giving him a personal game device. Still, it is nice to have the ability to use itto access the Internet or for games (for example we downloaded a chess game that he loves and is allowed to play as much as he wants).

I wasn’t sure I’d like reading on a Kindle. I still prefer print books but I have found that it’s less of an issue than I imagined and was very convenient for travel. I think my son has even less of an issue with it being a book on a reader vs. a print book since he’s grown up more in the digital world.

I'd get one of the e-ink readers, either the Nook with the light or the Kindle Paperwhite. My kids each have their own tablet, but they have a Nook (Simple Touch, I think) for reading. Its screen is so much easier on the eyes than a tablet.

I'd get a (still available used) kindle touch. Good price point and the audio book feature has been a huge hit. If amazon still has those 23 or whatever free professional audio books def. get them. I can't count how many times my boys have listened to The Wizard of Oz. my 9 and 7 year olds each saved and bought theirs and I'm so glad they did! I would also definitely get e-ink.

Enjoy

I actually got the paperwhite for christmas (early gift) from DH. I am giving DD my old keyboard kindle for Christmas. Fortunately the software was just updated so that it also has parental controls! I really like having the light in my paperwhite. It is very nice, and the kindle is very sturdy. I have heard that the lighting is better than the nooks. Other than that, I think they are pretty equal. Paperwhite does not support audiobooks. My DH has the 79 kindle. He wishes he too had the light, and he says that the lack of keyboard or touch (which brings up a keyboard that you touch on the screen) makes anything with typing a pain. You have to toggle to each letter and hit enter. Other than that, he likes his kindle as well.

We just chose the Kindle fire hd since it has "immersion" capability if you own both the whispersync audible and e-book versions of a book from amazon. Immersion allows you to listen and read both the audible and e-book versions at the same time with the words highlighted as you go. I thought this was a cool feature for some cool classic books such as "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." I think the paperwhite seems cool too but you cannot play audible books on them. My son is a voracious reader but we have been enjoying audible books in the car lately:)

We all have kindle keyboards here. We all love them. As for parental controls, when we got them it didn't have any, but I just simply didn't share the wifi password with them and would just hook the kindle to the computer via USB to load on books for them.

I would stay away from the Fire and Nook Color if this is going to be for only reading, the e-ink screens are much easier on the eyes. Ours don't have lights but we have covers with built in lights which are awesome.
