I use Dropbox for my own personal stuff - kind of as a backup. I also use it to share with my husband, but not with the whole wide world.

For sharing with other people, I originally used Google Docs (now Google Drive) for a while but it is very complicated with sharing settings and had a ton of problems not letting people download stuff. So I switched to 4shared, and I don't love the 20-second delay, but it seems to work and gives me a lot of space (15gb right now) for all kinds of files...

I have to say here - I LOVE Dropbox. We use the software both for Windows and Ubuntu, and it is literally the most stable program on either computer. I know I sound like an ad, but the software makes backups seamless and instant - every time I change a file, it's updated in the "cloud" and my husband can grab it from his computer OR I can access it anywhere in the world. Plus, there are these snazzy Windows icons that show you when it's updating your files, with little checkmarks to show each file that is happily backed up. It takes very little space in the background and can save you a ton of heartbreak. That said, I don't use it for widespread file sharing; I don't want others having access to my more personal files.

You don't sound like an add :) just someone who is happy with the product.

Thanks, I do appreciate the extra details you've included here!

I use google docs.. apparently its been renamed to Google Drive. you get 5 gb for free. Don't need facebook, just a google account.

I thought I would mention I also use Google Drive, but more for personal docs/vids/etc. I wasn't sure which type of document storage you were asking about but Scribd is more for if you want to share docs with others. I use it to share docs on my homeschool blog for others to use but I use Google Drive to store my own docs to be accessible wherever I go or on whatever device I'm using.

I don't think so, I don't have a facebook and I use it to upload docs and then download from others.

Scribd is great.

I haven't used it for a long, long time, but I store and share documents on Dropbox.a116.jpg

You can have private folders in Dropbox, folders that you share with specific people and also have a public folder that is shared with the whole world. It's not an all or nothing thing. :)

Thanks so much!

I'm going to grab a space to sit down and really check out these suggestions to find 1, or 2 ;) , that will work for us.

I stopped using Scribd, because I was made aware by others that they were being required to have a membership before they could download. I'm in the process of switching all of my documents to Adobe Acrobat and I really like it so far.

I've had this problem with scribd, it was requiring a paid account. It seems to be on older files that have been "archived". I've emailed bloggers before to let them know their files had become inaccessible, they just have to go in their account and reset something. How annoying!

Box.com (not to be confused with Dropbox)

This is what I use snd have had no issues with it, but they have a size limit on their free account so I'm not sure what I'll do once I hit that limit.

I use Google to do group sharing of docs, spreadsheets. It's easy because anyone in the group can edit a spreadsheet or document on their tablets, smartphones, computers and everyone can see the updated version instantly.

I also have Dropbox and Skydrive for backups. I prefer Skydrive to Dropbox because I do not need to install anything on my computers to use Skydrive.

I like Dropbox

We're trying out dropbox right now, thanks to all the help filled options mentioned in this thread :)

For anyone else 'window shopping' for a new sharing/storage space one aspect I've noticed with pdfs saved to dropbox:

Some of the fonts we like to use don't translated over to the documents when you view them on dropbox - it's no big deal as when we opened the pdf all the fonts are in tact.

Although I have used my free DropBox account to share documents, my reason for using it is off site backup. When my PC was destroyed by Lightning, 2 years ago, the latest versions of our web sites were on DropBox, but not on the CD-RW media I had. I downloaded the latest files from DropBox and was able to continue, without losing any work.

Religiously, I backup files to DropBox, immediately after creating or updating them. I am trying to get my DD to do the same and backup her schoolwork in her DropBox account, immediately.

I agree—great tool.

Two of my kids did NaNoWriMo this year, and we used DropBox to store their writing every day, both in case something happened to our computers, and so they could access it from another location where we didn't have our desktop.
