yorkshire_parkin
Are Saxon Math books genrally the correct level (e.g. 7/6 is for 6th grade)? thanks -rebecca-
snickelfritz
(only admitted average or above students) used Saxon a grade ahead. They had had an *in* with the original publishing company (before it sold to whatever mega-publisher it sold to.) Don't know if that makes a difference. I'm just saying that they had a lot of advice from the *source*.
Margo out of lurking
That has not been my experience. Qualification: I have no math background, nor am I a math brain in any sense. However, while my dd was doing fine in Saxon 3, I realized she was completely unprepared for standardized testing in math (while we were doing a test prep workbook). We had to supplement heavily for several weeks and it was still her lowest scoring subject (60th percentile). Yes, better than half the kids, but far lower than our local school district. When she was in Saxon 6/5, she was struggling, and we finally switched to Singapore. Level 4. She picked it up quickly, but I found Singapore 4 to be similar in content to Saxon 6/5. Just my own opinion, I know many are happy with Saxon and how it's working for them. :) It was just not a good fit for us at the time, and I've been hsing long enough to know that it might be a better fit for us in the future! (I never say "Never!" anymore, lol.)
Chris in VA
I find the lower grades to be a little behind--we've used it a year ahead so far, but I don't think we would be happy with the change in format for 5/4. Not using it anyway--dd going to school.
starlashine
Using Saxon on grade level has worked out fine for my son so far, we are going into Saxon 2 for second grade next year. I am happy with his progress and he seems on par or above with his peers. Of course, maybe he is just below average? Although most of the comments I get on his level of intelligence are "Oh my gosh, your kid is so smart!", and I see that he is very smart, so I don't think so. I personally think you should do their placement tests and base your grade level decision on that. The tests are on their website. I think bumping up the level on the advice of others without doing the placement yourself could be a bad idea. But, this is JMHO.
Guest Lori in MN
We didn't do the lower grades, I used Horizons for K-3 and then switched to Saxon. With each kid, I did the placement test first. 3 out of 3 kids tested so far tested into the 6/5 book so we ended up skipping Saxon's 4th grade level each time. Janis in DE
I've used Saxon from kindergarden. We started with Saxon 1, so we have always been ahead a year. We just finished 5th grade and Saxon 76. We will be moving to Video Text Algebra next month, but taking 3 years to do it. Veritas Press also uses it a year ahead. Love2Learn
My son started homeschooling last year in 4th grade. Prior to that he was in public school. He placed into Saxon 6/5 for 4th (a year ahead).
