hollyh
I forsee my future with shoes taking over the house... I'm looking for some ideas for shoe organizers or how different families organize their shoes - especially ideas from families with several kids. My kids all have at least 8 pairs of shoes (I like shoes) and that doesn't count the hubs and me... I don't want them in their rooms as they take them off at the door. Curious what others do! Desert Rat
We do take ours off at the door. I have a little cubby organizer where dh and I store the shoes we use most often for that season. My boys take their shoes to their rooms. We come through the garage into a catch all room. It has the sports uniforms/equipment in bins under a bench seat. It houses everyones' jackets and hats on hooks on the back of the door. It's also our office room. The boys' bedrooms are right next to this room, so they just kick their shoes off in their rooms. The reason this started is because my youngest has very big feet. In fact, he's only one size smaller than his brother who is 3 years older. We shop at Target for summer flip-flops and the selection is limited, so they got similar shoes and fought over which pair belonged to whom. Problem solved. I would look into an over the door organizer and limit each kid to 2 pairs of shoes they wear most often. The rest go in their closets or the back of their doors. A.Balaban
We built an entry bench with three cubbies. Each cubbie has storage for a person's shoes (1 for me, 1 for dd/ds, 1 for DH) In the winter, we keep boots nearby too. We limit each person to 2pairs of shoes by the door. All all other shoes go up in their closet. When I am getting a kid dressed, I have to think a little bit about what pair of shoes I want them to wear. Rules are shoes come off as soon as you come inside.
momofkhm
We have an over-the-door rack on the wall in our garage. The levels are by height - dh has the highest level since he's tallest. But honestly, most of the shoes end up in a pile on the floor under the rack. And now the girls take their shoes up to their room. I think they end up under the bed. But everyone's dirty shoes still end up in the garage. In the pile on the floor.
TheReader
We have a storage basket in the entry way, and it's large enough to hold everyone's main pair of shoes + one back-up pair, although with boys, mine only have the 2 pair to begin with so that works nicely. Everyone takes shoes off at the door and they know to put them in the basket. It's a lidded basket so that the mess of shoes doesn't show, but it's wicker so that it breathes and doesn't stink. I have multiple pairs of shoes, so I sometimes have to remember to grab a pair or two from the basket and return them to my closet, but really this plan works well. Pamela H in Texas
We have four laundry baskets by the front door. Each is split up by group of kids/adults. We have to do a reorganization of them monthly. Recently, I put the "women's" one in my room giving an extra basket worth of room for everyone else. Hypatia.
We have a small entry table beside the door that has the shelves removed (it used to have a middle shelf on each side), the kids call it the shoe table. We used to just pile the shoes on the bottom shelf but they would overflow into the foyer. A little over a week ago I bought 2 large baskets to go in the bottom, one for adult shoes and one for kids' shoes. This keeps them contained and looks much nicer. I try to keep it to one or sometimes 2 pairs of shoes per person in there so periodically I'll pull some out and send them back up to the closets, for some reason DH seems to be the worst offender. The kids are better about always putting their shoes in, even the 2 year old knows to take his shoes off and put them in the basket as soon as he comes in. Now I just need to figure out something for storing the Crocs/rain boots/etc. by the back sliding door that the older two wear out to take care of the chickens every day! Mommee & Baba
We have a shoe rack in the entry way of our home. It's a known rule that guests remove shoes and the kids don't wear shoes in the house. They are also allowed 1 pair of shoes on the rack at all times, that's it!
