Linking to facebook and privacy

Recommended Posts

I started another new thread and it asked if I wanted to share to facebook. I don't really care to link my posts to facebook. It looks like you have to actually link the accounts before you're able to do so. However, will others be able to do so and will our replies to such threads show up on facebook? I'd really prefer my conversations here stay here. Will there be a way to show which threads are shared? Thanks.

Good question. I am on both here and fb...I have friends from her on my fb account BUT I still like to keep them apart. I am not connecting myself. But if someone replies to a post I make and they want it connected to their's does that mean all posts in the thread are then showing up in their feed? Not cool. Public forum or not, i do not need everything I say connected to fb.

We have board members with stalkers that do not even have fb and should not be forced to have their posts be put into that venue. Not to mention many of us keep our fb privacy settings very hard to protect privacy, linking the two then puts our full names, locations, pictures of our kids with full names etc out in the open for every troll, stalker, lurker and perv out there just as much for the legit members. There is a reason we have user names, and say things like ds and dd rather than names, we want our privacy and the linking of the 2 takes down the walls in inserts doorways with a big old welcome sign to everyone.

Oh yuck, I am definitely not a fan of people being able to like threads. Not that I am a huge poster but it's time for lurk mode unless this goes away.

I agree. It just seems like more trouble than it's worth. I think most of us don't care whether there's a Facebook component here or not.

(Although I think the "Like" on the posts doesn't have anything to do with Facebook, does it? I thought that was more just a thumbs-up sort of thing that was solely for board users.)

Touring the new improved forum.... don't like the FB Like at the bottom. Does that mean every post in the thread WILL show up on FB no matter who clicks it??? I want my posts on here to stay on here and I will disable my FB if not.

Yeah, I feel like there are far too many ways to "share" the stuff we post here (look at all those little icons to the bottom left), and I can't find any privacy options. I'd like to opt out of having my posts shared off the forum.

The "privacy policy" linked at the bottom is very brief, and only covers data collection.

We're listening! (Actually, John is currently sleeping after spending over 48 hours getting the old forum software converted. So he'll be back to listening as soon as he's conscious.) We promise to address all of these concerns just as soon as we can.

You can't stop people from sharing threads on a public board. However, I don't want to have WTM Facebook-ized, especially the general board where some pretty personal stuff is shared. And I really don't want changes that might affect user privacy by integrating WTM with other systems at any level without some discussions about the implications for members here.

Wanted to wish John a well earned sleep.... and also wanted to chime in that I am REALLY hoping that threads won't be shared on Facebook. That feels gross to me....

We wish him well rest and a breakfast biscuit or well earned spa day and a bottle of ibuprofen.

This is my main concern as well. I understand there is no illusion of privacy on a public message, however, there is a level of disconnect between WTM posters and facebook at the present.

I'm not on FB, so I didn't really pay much attention when I first signed in. If you use your old username and password, and don't sign in through Facebook, does it make a difference? I mean, would that keep you anonymous? Or would other people still be able to link you somehow? Sorry, just trying to figure it all out. :D

PS: It will be diffiicult for me to let FB go due to the few " friends" I really do keep up with and help give free clothing, books, and alot of needs away locally!

Not to mention my daily battle with Mr. Andrew Pudewa on Words With Friends! :(

Well I do use facebook and will continue to do so. I would assume it would show up with your user name, as there would be no way to link your facebook and your WTM account without you doing it. (I think). However, if someone else shares a thread, are your topics showing up on facebook without your consent? Obviously even those of us on facebook are not friends with everyone who has the ability to "share", and I prefer to keep my facebook privacy in my hands (settings, names, friends, etc...), not the hands of another random individual from this board.

I'd do a test, but don't want to link the accounts in case it's harder to unlink them later.

I liked your post and one earlier today, and I didn't see anything show up on my FB feed at all. I think if you log in with Facebook, you'd see that, but I don't think the "Like" here is connected to FB really. If you "Like" the PHP page on Facebook, then I think you have a chance of showing up in the sidebar on the main forum, but unless WTM starts actively promoting threads on its FB page, there's not much actual risk of accidental exposure here.

Chiming in with the others . . . I am adamantly opposed to my posts being linked, ever, to Facebook, either by myself of anyone else. What happens on TWTM forums should stay on the forums.

Honestly I liked the sharing options until I realized that it isn't just my posts I'd be able to tweet (I don't use any of the others). But not that I realize that if I link here on Twitter it will link the whole thread (forum). That isn't all that great considering what swellmomma said above.

Adding my two cents. I use Facebook mostly to connect with people I already have a strong connection with as a friend or family member. While I have no illusions that anything I say on an internet forum could ever be truly "private," I do not want my activity here to be "shared" to other venues with just the click of one button. I don't want to make it easy for what I say to travel to many other places on the internet.

I actually had hoped that a change to a new forum type would also bring with it somewhat more privacy. I have always been unhappy that my posts quickly come up on Google searches when I use search terms related to topics of my posts. Therefore, I had hoped that a login would be required in order for people to be able to read the posts, as is the case in another popular homeschooling forum I frequent.

Nothing looks different. Nothing I posted or liked showed up on my FB page or the PHP FB page that I could see. I'm logging back out and trying to unlink the account now.

ETA: I just signed out and signed back in the regular way. It didn't default to my FB login, as far as I could tell. I don't think this is a big deal, but if they could make even the suggestion of a link between FB and WTM go away, everyone would probably feel better about it.

It's not the like button, that is board specific. It's the "share" with facebook you see when you start a post. There are also share buttons for twitter, google + and others right above where it says who is reading this topic.

If you look under your settings under user name (upper right corner). There is a place to manage facebook. You have to login in with your facebook on here to have any of your information linked on your facebook page, at least that is the way it looks to me. However, that doesn't answer the question of what happens if others link to their facebook and "share".

poor John, Perhaps he should change your name to Pandora. Little did he know...

This is why I never, ever use sites that require linking to Facebook (this one is optional, I understand). I simply will not connect my real identity to everything I say anywhere.

Similarly with privacy, I'm not particularly comfortable with having the names of everyone who is following a thread listed on the thread.

And the way that the PHP FB page is listed in the corner of the forum front page shows a number of the people who have liked the page. If profile pics are the same, it's a cinch to link user name and real name.

Update on the privacy issue btw hive and fb. I have been talking with john on the php page. He says there is a way to turn off your profile being shown in the widget on the hive if you still want to like php but not have it show up. Also I told him my concerns about the sharing of threads. He said it should only share a link not the posts themselves, so if the sharer's friends want to check it out they have to come to the hive to do so. He said he is going to test it and if it shows up as an actual post not a link he will turn that feature off on the hive.

I agree. That's exactly what I was trying to say earlier. I'm well aware that nothing on the internet is truly private. If I google my name, I can find posts I made on Usenet almost 20 years ago. Previously people could link to threads and individual posts, but now it just seems like it's too easy to share everything here.

I have all platform applications turned off within Facebook, so I know nothing I do here will show up there.

What's the advantage of this Facebook connection, to anyone? I use FB sparingly (don't share anything about the kids as everyone else seems to), so i kind of regard FB as a full frontal privacy assault. Are we being trendy, earning money for the site, or is there an actual benefit to the connection? Just thinking aloud. I'm sure hive members' concerns will be addressed, but my initial reaction was negative.

And evidently if you "Like" a post, then the poster gets a notification of that. I'm not sure that is intuitive. It may seem more like an anonymous "this was helpful" thumbs up.

That can be changed though in notification set up. I changed all my notifications to be on here and not via email which is what they were first set to, but I believe you can also have them turned off. There was a LOT of things to be notified of so some people may have it set to not tell them when something they post is liked. I appreciate knowing someone liked something I said. I take it to be like on fb when it can mean they agree, they found it insightful, they thought it was cute or whatever. It just means no more threads with quotes and the I agree smiley.

Elegantlion,

Thanks for posting this. Nmoira, a facebook link that would have my posts show up outside this forum would be a deciding factor on whether or not I would continue to come here. I know this is a "public forum," but with it linked to Facebook, that makes it super-public, if that makes sense. That is no place I want to go.

I'm very concerned about linking to FB. Another farming group that I was part of, changed their settings and my very private question about how to deal with in-laws became very public, with an angry SIL to boot. Not a good day. I come here to ask questions and find sanity in my homeschooling world and I wouldn't like it if my extended family even knew that I posted on here! Some would definitely follow, sign up and read what I had posted and then "share" at the next family meal.

If you look under your settings, it has an option to disassociate from facebook. I'm pretty sure nothing I do here will show up on facebook since I'm not signed in under facebook.

Okay, I tried it. I liked this thread at the bottom of the page. Then I went and checked and it did not come up on my recent activity. I then logged into DH's FB account, since I know he follows me and it did have an update that I liked a link, but when you click on the link it says he can't access it. There is nothing about the hive or anything.

Elegant Lion, swellmomma and anyone else I am FB friends, you can try going to my profile and seeing if you can find something linked to the Hive. So far I am not to worried.
