Crimson Wife
Kids can set their own word count for NaNoWriMo. My DD's goal is 15,000 words this year. I'm not sure whether it is still possible to enroll for this year, however, given that it started 2 weeks ago.
Mom22ns
My dd's goal her first year was 5,000 words. You could do 500 words if that is what best fits your child. There are some suggestions for setting goals at NaNoWriMo. That said, I wouldn't start now. It is best started in October using their great student workbook to prewrite. Then give them all of November to write what they have planned. If they are little that might be a few sentences each day. This year our goals are 15,000, 30,000 and 50,000.
