funathome
I have used MUS for 12 years (& still doing so with remaining ones) I will say that I absolutely loved the way MUS does fractions. Fractions (like math) is such a hard concept to grasp. By making it so visual with the overlays, all 3 kids picked it up in no time and were ready to move on. My kids likes "seeing" and "doing". They often would play with the fraction overlays and in doing so improved their learning. MUS helps with those visuals. YMMV here with MUS, but that is what makes home schooling great! :001_smile: Pick and choose what you need, discard the rest. robsiew
Sorry... posted wrong place! BTW, I'm using MUS right now for my daughter and we're in Epsilon and LOVE it. It fits her perfectly. I used it a few years ago for my son and it did not work well for him. I ended up switching all my kids to Math Mammoth. A few years later MM has been perfect for my boys, but I brought my dd back to MUS this year and that has been the best thing for her. Sometimes not everything works with every child or it only works to a certain point. Use your judgement!

Am I alone here?? IF not, what did you do to get through fractions??? thanks. I am right there with you! Epsilon is bringing my daughter to tears nearly daily. I am hoping it.gets better, because she has done MUS gamma and delta, and they were such a great fit. :/

I end up trying to remember how I was taught fractions...and to me, some of the lessons are just mixed up...or they make it harder than it needs to be....too many steps, in my opinion. MerryAtHope
I actually really appreciate the way MUS teaches fractions. I never knew you could divide a fraction without inverting and multiplying (and never knew why inverting and multiplying "worked" either.) That said, where are you in the steps? They do teach inverting and multiplying, and it may be easier to teach your daughter that at this point. We actually didn't start MUS until pre-algebra, but I bought the Epsilon DVD specifically to teach my kids the other ways to do fractions and to deepen their understanding. Once they knew each method, I told them they could choose what to do. I think if she can understand and master each method, then it's fine to let her know she can do it the way she wants to. The issue is that if she doesn't really understand what she's doing, then later if she forgets, she won't be able to recognize why an answer is incorrect. Fractions are hard, but if she can work through it and hang in there, I think it will be beneficial in the long run. I totally get you! :-) I think Merry has some good advice for us! I'm going to try to stick it out, and hope for the best. My poor firstborn! She is always guinea pig for curriculum. :/ I have added in Horizons Math 5 as extra practice and she really seems to enjoy the change of pace from Just fractions. It seems to help her get through her one page of MUS.
islanbonita1015
I thought the way MUS teaches fractions was great till my ds cried over it in frustration. I would like to revisit it later. I think my ds was still just adjusting to being newly homeschooled at the time so I'm still holding onto Epsilon for now.:tongue_smilie:

DS sailed through most of MM5 material, but is bogging in some of the fractions part.
