We have a few different resources I've picked up over the years. Some I like more than others, but all get used:

The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation

Grammar Girl the Ultimate Writing Guide for Students

Elements of Style by Strunk and White

I also have writing resource books that cover writing specific topics such as proper format for bibliographies, footnotes, endnotes, etc.

I know this isn't what you are looking for or need, but this was an issue for our family in years past. Whenever we finished our grammar work, we would then need a good reference book. That problem was solved with Analytical Grammar. When our children finish AG, I make copies of the lesson sheets and spiral bind them with a clear cover. This reference book covers just about everything we need for grammar, and it's easy to use because it is familiar. We have other grammar books on our shelves, but we always turn to AG first.

Sorry, Lisa, I don't mean to hijack the thread, but thought this might be helpful for families looking a good grammar curriculum that can be used after the work is done.

I've used Elements of Style by Strunk and White as a reference since I was in college. It is also on ds's college list of resources along with being on the reading list for the FSOT. You can't go wrong with Strunk and White. Eats, Shoots & Leaves is also a good, readable punctuation book.

I'm still keeping my R&S 8 set, too. I also have older editions of these on my shelf:

Rod and Staff English Handbook

The Gregg Reference Manual by William A. Sabin(9th edn - I've had this one for a long time)

It is time to move out my Rod and Staff 8 set and I would like to replace it with a solid grammar reference book for my permanent library. Do you have any suggestions?

I am not a fan of A Beka generally, but until a few years ago, I still had my high school A Beka grammar book, Handbook of Grammar and Composition by James A. Chapman, on my office desk, complete with my high school scribblings and no cover. My brother borrowed it to brush up for some kind of aptitude test and never returned it, so I bought a used copy on half.com. I am the acknowledged grammar guru in my office, so we all refer to it when there is a question. This book covers issues no one else does (even Rod & Staff, which I adore and have used for years with my own kids). I would share the ISBN except that it either does not have one or is missing that page.

What a great idea. I will do that too! I've loved AG and dd has completely understood grammar for the first time using it.
