Interesting! I notice the projects/tasks are all smaller. (smaller than the big house kits and stuff) Do you find that makes them more doable for your active boys, or is that not a selling point?

My older two are fine with regular Legos and are into Lego Power Functions, Lego Mindstorms, and Lego Technical now. They simply run out of bricks. For them this was an inexpensive way to add more basic bricks. I typically watch the clearance section of Target and buy sets even of themes we don't use when they reach 75% off just for the bricks.

However, these look really good for my PDD-NOS son because of the task cards and smaller projects. I've also look at the Life of George 2 for him since he likes the iPad so much. I figured ds would go through the projects, we'd play with his creations, and when he's ready they'll be added to our bulk Lego collection.

I think one even mentioned it coming in plastic container that will end up repurposed for something.

Ahh, makes sense! Ds is into building things right now, but it's more of an engineering angle. Like he made a crossbow (like you use for hunting) out of tinkertoys, and he has spent the past couple days shooting it over and over, seeing how far the rubberband mechanism could be stretched to make the arrow go farther. So I'm not sure regular legos are going to be right for him right now. I've always heard boys tend to like legos (and some girls), but I don't know how to gauge what when and don't want a bust. (I know we both know about busts with toys, lol!)

I got him Superstructs for Christmas, and I think those will be a big hit. Turns out they don't make wood tinkertoys anymore. The Superstructs have more types of pieces anyway (gears and whatnot). I'm pretty sure those will go over big. The legos I don't know about. Like you say, I don't want to miss the great deal if they would go over big, but I don't want to pay and have them not be used now either. I just don't know.

So your older boys are doing regular lego stuff, not these types. Are the regular lego things they do the really long, involved projects (shuttles, houses, blah blah) or do they tend to be shorter and limited by attention? Or they're more driven toward the engineering side of it? I don't think I've ever seen the Technical and Mindstorms. Ds is so active, I don't suspect he'd want to sit and build really involved things. He has good social play, so he seems content to create villages out of things already mostly built (Playmobil, Thomas) and interact with the components. You know, that might be my answer. And maybe later when he does get into lego it would be with those engineering ones, not the build building kind. Hmm. Would your older two have *liked* these deal sets when they were younger? Any advice on sorting through that? You say get 'em anyway just for the bulk of pieces? :D

You want these types for the 4-6 age range. After that, it will be apparent if they want the engineering/technic/Mindstorm stuff. However, ds still maintains that the regular Lego bricks are the most flexible to design with and he engineers mostly with these and adds elements of Power Functions and motors on when he wants movement or remote control.

Except for the DUPLO set, these are regular sized Lego, right? I see on the site it mentions them in the preschool category. We have a whole bunch of Lego mostly from sets that were built and then torn apart and never put together again. My son is in to trying to build Minecraft spaces from regular bricks right now. Those sets look like a fun way to add a bunch more building options but they would need to fit with the size he uses now. Just curious if you know.

Well, my youngest, whom these are for, will turn 9 the week after Christmas. This is a special needs board and with fine motor, visual spatial differences, etc. the age will vary quite a bit.

Of course, I meant no offense. I only suggesed the age range to let OhE know that her ds was the perfect age to start working with the small bricks because she seemed inclined to wait for later in her post. I should have been more clear that ages 4-6 is a good time to begin working with the small legos. I don't think there is a top age range ever!

Michele, thanks, those are great ideas! And yes, he clearly goes toward that inventive, engineering side. The superstructs I got him have lots of gears and wheels and stuff. Dd was the same way. She LOVED tinkertoys. It's interesting to hear how legos are working out for your boys. Dd is sort of iffy on them. Sometimes she likes them, but she peters out. She definitely doesn't LOVE them. But if all 3 of your boys enjoy them (and between the mix they reflect where ds will probably end up), then probably he will too. I didn't know about those challenges. That's an interesting way to approach lego building!

Fair Prospects--I knew what you meant. :) And you're right, I was sort of confused because on the one hand legos seem like something you do later, but the small nature of the projects on the task cards (and the preschool label on their website) mean they're trying to hit that particular level. Definitely it can go up to all ages. I think sometimes I underestimate ds. His speech is so good, but I guess he still gets babied or treated young. We were blown away with his crossbow this week, hehe. I think it was the shock that someone so young was so precise and technical. (you have to put the rubberband into the slit in the tinkertoy rod to load it, etc.) So yeah, there's probably some lack of realizing on my part what he's actually capable of doing. ;)

For those that ordered these early and were charged early ... right now, HSBC is saying that Lego isn't planning on shipping early (charged my card on 11/23, still not shipping until 12/14) ... seems if they wanted to start early to expedite things, they should expedite shipping things as well as charging customers. If you agree, you might want to go to HSBC and send a message. Maybe if enough of us speak up, they'll ship the orders that they already charged some of us for almost two weeks ago now.

Is the early charge because they sold out?

No, they're still taking orders. Apparently because of the large number of orders they got, they decided that it would be more convenient for the vendor to start processing them early. They sent an email about it. But apparently, "processing" to them only means charging customers' credit cards, not actually sending their orders.

On the page I found, it said they sold out and are no longer taking orders. Do you have info that they're taking orders again? Have a link for that?

I would have loved as set for my son, and had planned to buy them last payday. They were sold out on the site and it said they aren't planning to get any more. The only thing that isn't sold out is one of the Duplo sets, all the regular lego sets are gone. I'd have been thrilled just to have gotten the deal before that time and am not surprised that they debited your account when they closed those sets to any new purchases, unless of course you ordered the one set that is still available.
