old photos to CDR's

Recommended Posts

We'd like to transfer our old photos (black and white from when we were kids, color from every time else) onto CDR's. What should we ask the photographer or photo lab? Is this worth doing? Will the technology last? Can we make scrapbooks out of digital photos?

The color photos are fading, the black and white ones are fine. The color negatives are fine, and we don't own the black and white negatives.

a CD that you can write to, perhaps?

But I've been copying family photos to my harddrive and transferring them to CDs for years. I've got an old (late 1990's vintage, works just fine) HP ScanJet that I've used. I've saved the images as jpegs on my computer. Recently, I downloaded Picassa (free Google product) to my computer and it helped me organize, edit and save my pictures to CDs. I've made gift CDs for my grandmother. You can also have prints made from these images if you are connected to the net. Picassa has links to many sites.

I think a decent scanner would work better than turning your photos over to a photo store. I get nervous handing out any one-of-a-kind photos to anyone.

Yep! These are a great way to preserve. Picassa is a great tool as well. I'm using it now and really like it. It also has a direct link to Snapfish.com so you can order prints as well as a myriad of other products with your photos. I just made a calendar that turned out wonderfully.

:iagree: What K said.....

I just scanned a bunch of my wedding photos in to put up on my blog. I use GIMP, which is a free editing software program that is pretty powerful. It is equal to photoshop.

You can go in and edit color and make any fixes that you want this way.

The other choice if you don't want to hand them over is what my husband is buying me.

A negative scanner.....If you want it done nicely, I just wouldn't use someone like Walmart. I would look for a shop that specializes in photography and doing this kind of thing.

For the photo's you don't have negatives of...they can make you a set if you think you will ever need one.
