sparrow Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 My skin is officially saying, "hey, pay attention to me". I am a drugstore/Walmart kind of girl for my toiletries. We live rurally and it's simply easier....unless there are inexpensive items I can buy on Amazon with Prime. My skin facts: I'm 42, have always had an oily T-zone, but other areas are getting dry, where they didn't used to. Some fine lines around my eyes, but no wrinkles yet. My skin just looks dull. I am looking for ideas for cleansers (currently I use Dove and it's not cutting it), moisturizers, toner (I think I'll be getting Thayer's rose petal witch hazel), and makeup. I use a Maybelline tinted moisturizer and a light powdering of Coty Airspun, which looked fine until about 2 weeks ago :001_huh:. I used Bare Minerals for a few years, but my skin changed and it felt way too heavy. I'm just ready for an(inexpensive) change :D. Quote

HollyDay Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I like Cerave cleanser and day/evening moisturizers. They can be purchased at your local drug store or Walmart or Target. I've tried other brands but find this works best on my now 50 year old skin. I've used it for a couple year now. I also like Physician's Formula for a nice foundation. My first choice for a "dressy" foundation is Clinique SuperBalance moisturizing foundation. But, for everyday, easy wear, I like a powder foundation from Physician's Formula. I know Target carries it and I have purchased it from RiteAid. Quote
caroljenn Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I just found Burt's Bees sensitive skin wipes. They are fast and easy, and I like the way my skin feels after I use them. Quote
Element Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 (edited) I'm not over 40 but I use the same thing that my mom does and she is... over 40. :tongue_smilie: We first use a layer of Cetaphil Daily Moisturizer. I use the SPF 15 and she uses same thing with the higher SPF. We let that dry for a few minutes and then we put on Revlon Colorstay Foundation. (Hint: The one for oily skin smells like paint. Blah! I would not recommend this. Get the one for dry or normal skin.) I used Lancome Color ID for years but she convinced me to try the Colorstay and, for 1/3 the price, it's great (as long as it goes on over moisturizer. It feels too heavy without.) Another thing I would recommend is a good foundation brush. I don't really think brands matter, but I would invest in a big name (MAC, Lancome, whatever) foundation brush if you haven't already. I think any foundation feels like it goes on too heavy without a foundation brush. For cleansers, we both use Phisoderm bar soap or Cetaphil bar soap (whichever is on sale/ in stock.) All of these can be purchased at Walmart, Target, or Walgreens (the Phisoderm is kind of hard to find sometimes though.) ETA: I have this foundation brush. Yes, it is pricey but it makes your foundation last longer because you don't need as much and the brush itself will last years. I have no idea what brand brush my mom uses but, like I said, I think they're all about the same if you get into the upper-end brands. Edited November 6, 2012 by Element Quote
besroma Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I like Cerave cleanser and day/evening moisturizers. They can be purchased at your local drug store or Walmart or Target. :iagree: This is what my dermatologist recommends. Quote
LaxMom Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I really liked the Aveeno skin brightening line, though I am happier with the Kiss My Face Potent & Pure products (which I often order from Amazon, and they have a starter kit with sample sizes). If you're anywhere near me, the last two weeks have been really hard on skin, with the weather changes. Just drying and hagifying. I've been gobbling on the moisturizer until everything evens back out. (Which is normal for me when we start with cold, dry weather every year) Quote

Toocrazy!! It has made a noticeable difference in the texture of my skin. I have quite a bit of sun damage and discoloring. I'll get the Pro-x moisturizer when I run out of the Neutrogena I'm using right now. I've always liked Olay products. Quote
NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I use CerVe AM, Cerve PM and Cerve Hydrating Cleanser (available at Walmart and behind the Rx counter at Costco). I have added generic Retin-A micro from AllDayChemist.com. I went to my family doctor for a physical and while I was there I asked for the Rx for rentin-A and she gave it to me without hesitation. I use a Apricot Scrub from Swiss Ives a couple time a week to exfoliate. I don't wear foundation now, but when I did it was just a tinted moisturizer from Clinique called City Scape. Quote
TranquilMind Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I like the Cover Girl sensitive skin foundation. I use Neutrogena concealer. And some really great shade of pink frosty lipstick. I don't spend a lot on this stuff. I did buy a powder from Whole Foods though, but that lasts for years. I also buy organic skin products to wash and moisturize. Quote

Merry Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I put a little baking soda in liquid Cetaphil or the generic version to form a liquidy paste to scrub my face with. It really works to soften the face and smooth it out. I do it about once a week or month. Quote
Greta Lea Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I like Cerave cleanser and day/evening moisturizers. They can be purchased at your local drug store or Walmart or Target. This is what I use also. I'm 45 and have sensitive skin. I love Cerave Cream for the rest of my body. Quote
sparrow Posted November 6, 2012 Author Posted November 6, 2012 I've never heard of Cerave. Sounds like lots of you like it! I'll go back through and look at all of the suggestions before I go to the store. I do think the weather change has something to do with my aggravation. Today I found that if I just use my tinted moisturizer everywhere and light powder *only* in the T-zone, it is much better! I'll add my own primer suggestion, for those of you that may not know: Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder Gel! That stuff is awesome. Quote
SKL Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I use Aveeno. And when my sister gives me some for Christmas, I use Clinique face wash. I have acne (always have, always will) so I use the stuff with salicylic (sp?) acid. Quote
HollyDay Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I've never heard of Cerave. Sounds like lots of you like it! http://cerave.com/?gclid=CIyniJzsvbMCFRSSPAodVB4ALg I love it. Dd's dermatologist originally recommended it for her very dry/eczema skin, but it was later decided she needed something prescription instead. So, I started using Cerave because I had it already and didn't want it to go to waste. It has been a really good thing for my skin. I don't use anything else now. Quote
Alice Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I’m not a big makeup person but I like this tinted moisturizer for the days when I want to wear foundation. It also has sunscreen in it. It’s very light but provides just enough coverage. It’s expensive but you need very little so it lasts a long time. For me 1-2 tubes a year is plenty. http://www.amazon.com/Laura-Mercier-Tinted-Moisturizer-Nude/dp/B00062ACA0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352325688&sr=8-1&keywords=laura+mercier Quote
I talk to the trees Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I know this isn't exactly a drugstore item, but stick with me...My skin is also at the "please pay attention to me" age, and add to that the fact that wildly fluctuating hormones have given me cystic acne, which I'm treating topically with a gel that completely dries skin out. A few months ago, I started using coconut oil as a moisturizer. It works like a charm! And it doesn't interfere with the acne treatment! My dermatologist kept telling me to use Cetaphil, but that just made my skin drier and itchier! (ymmv) Quote

I've always liked Olay products. Love the Olay brush (itself a knockoff of that $200 version whose name escapes me at the moment...something -sonic). We bought extra brushes so the whole family can use it; it works equally well for teen skin and my old-lady hide. And another vote for Cerave, though the drugstore guy thought I was nuts when I asked for Ker-ah-way...in my defense, we'd just finished a Latin lesson. Quote
kewb Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I am over 40. I use raw honey to wash my face. Since switching to honey for a facial wash I no longer need astringent/toner. For moisturizer I have used Oil of Olay for decades now (or as I like to call it-Oil of Old Ladies). Currently I am using of Olay Complete with SPF 15. Quote
