nrself
Quick question about MCT levels. I know he has 6 levels, so what age or grade are you using each level with? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that level 1 was good for advanced 3rd graders. Then what? Thanks! Nicole
Chrysalis Academy
If you do a search for "MCT" you can probably read a lot of opinions about this. There is a pretty significant jump in difficulty between Town and Voyage levels, so some people choose to do something else between them, so do something like Island-3rd, Town-4th, ?-5th, Voyage-6th. I'm not really sure about the upper 3 levels. It's hard to tell until you see how your dc responds to the program. We started kind of late - spring of 4th grade - and skipped the Island level. We're midway through Town level now in 5th grade, and we'll finish by Jan. I am thinking we will plunge into Voyage at that point, and I think it will be fine. We like MCT, so I don't really see any reason to do something different just to wait on Voyage, but if I decide once we start using it that she isn't quite ready, I will hold off. We do use a different program (WWS) for primary writing instruction.
nrself
Thanks for telling what you're doing! I did do a MCT search but so many came up I didn't find anything about this particular question. I'll keep looking though. Nicole
KAM
If it helps, I am doing Town level with a 4th and 6th grader. Next year, I plan to start my 3rd grader on Island level.
dbmamaz
When i started homeschooling, my 8th grader couldnt write a paragraph. we used paragraph town and it was wonderful! then we did the voyage level in 9th grade. My son struggled with it (although I did assign him the hardest writing assignments, because the rest were too easy for him). The upper levels are pretty hard-core straight-up textbooks - joy of learning hard material, not kid-friendly as much, imo
