chocoholic
Can someone recommend a grammar/writing program for a 5th & 7th grader? There are so many choices, my head is spinning from all the researching. We are in our final year of Classical Conversations Essentials class and ready for a fresh start for next year. In the past, we've done FLL, and 3 years of CC's Essentials. I'm considering these (have no experience with any of the, but have been reading reviews & printing off samples): Rod & Staff Voyages in English 2011 (+Writing Strands or IEW or Wordsmith) Michael Clay Thomas Learning Language Arts Through Literature Saxon Grammar Suggestions welcome. Thanks so much.
Janice in NJ
Rod & Staff (I purchased over the phone directly from the company. This was years ago, so I don't know how folks are buying this series now.) Downloadable schedule/lesson plans here: http://corefoundations.wordpress.com/scheds-english-and-history/ WWS - Writing with Skill Start both of your kids at level one. Great writing program. Unmatched IMO. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/store/language-arts/writing/writing-middle-grades.html Peace, Janice
2_girls_mommy
Rod and Staff is great. I haven't used gr. 7 yet. My oldest is only 5th, but we won't be switching away from it. We use the writing in it. It has taught my dd a lot. Then I add the classical instruction on my own: dictation, outlining, summaries, etc in other subjects. SilverMoon
Looks like you have the most popular ones listed already. Classical Writing and Classical Composition are some other writing books you might consider. CC uses IEW? If you're happy with that instruction you could do it on your own, and just add grammar. My current seventh grader uses Rod and Staff's English, and is working through the Lively Art of Writing this year. Lively Art is a one semester course on the essay. She does the writing assignments in her English book, too. They're usually not very long and good practice. For fifth grade my older kids used Classical Writing. They did great, and their writing grew by leaps and bounds. It's not such a good fit with my current fourth grader, who'd much rather write about the nucleus of a cell than rewrite fiction. He's using a vintage text called Progressive Composition Lessons this year, but it's mostly just for the topics to write about as I teach him myself. At this point I plan to do his fifth grade year this way, too, but I do have Writing With Skill on the shelf if we need it. He's using Rod and Staff's English for grammar, and will stay in the series for fifth grade.
TheApprentice
My 7th grader is using Growing With Grammar and Writing With Skill. Writing With Skill is an excellent program; my son is gaining much confidence with this program.
coralloyd
My 5th grader does a mix of Rod & Staff and IEW. It has been working out really well for us. She is very solid in grammar and writing.
nomadicmama
We (try) to use Rod and Staff and IEW. We are very consistent with the IEW but not so much with the Rod and Staff. My youngest doesn't like to write at all so by the time we are done with IEW he is burnt out. Although he doesn't complain much if we just do the oral section of R&S. Thanks so much. After 4 years of FLL, we used Saxon Grammar for 2 years. My son did well with the grammar portion. We tried the writing portion, but it didn't work well for us. We are now usuing WWS and I highly recommend it. I think Saxon Grammar and WWS would be a good combination. Kim
