i bought a few of the cle math books to try out for my two oldest sons and they are almost done with the last one we have. i have thought alot about keeping with cle because i dont want to keep changing things up, but they dont seem to be retaining things well. i think they would do better with a more mastery type math. so i asked them some questions and here is what i got:

they both like a math where its more teacher taught then taught directly to them

they both dont like having lots of topics in the same lesson and want it to stick more to one thing at a time so they can get it (with cle they have to pull out the other workbooks to remember what to do)

is there a math like this? i thought about math u see but i know the dvd's play a big roll so im not sure that would be a good idea (with two littles running around it seems kind of time consuming to watch a dvd to teach the lesson. i also dont want to spend a ton. suggestions?

Math U See uses a 3-5 minute video once a lesson. There are approx. 6 pages in each lesson and a test, so the 3-5 minute video is about once a week.

I believe Teaching Textbooks and Chalkdust are not teacher intensive, and most upper math can be paired with Khan Academy videos to help out.

What about Math Mammoth? You can take the workbook in your hands and teach it at the white board (my DS prefers this method), then hand them the workbook with appropriate number of problems circled for them to do.

My son was able to watch the MUS lessons himself. Even if you watch the dvd's also, they are pretty short. If you have several children, they would likely get used more than once and so not be as expensive in the long run. You might even be able to put plastic sleeves over the workbook pages to make them reusable, or have the children copy out the problems. MUS seems to fit what you are looking for.

What level are the children at?

BJU is exactly as you described. It is teacher led. Each chapter covers a different topic but there is built in review at the end of each chapter from previous chapters. The TM is great and break things down for you and uses several additional hands on if you like. The only drawback is that it is originally for a classroom but I used it when I was schooling my step daughter and it worked great. You can find older edition fairly cheap although I understand the new editions are awesome.
