4kidlets4me
:iagree: I tell my kids all the time not to post anything on facebook that they wouldn't want a college admissions officer or potential employer to see. I think it would be better to show them how the privacy settings work so college admissions and employers wouldn't be able to see anything. My Facebook is completely private, I am not searchable, the public can only see my profile pic, which more often than not is not a picture of me, my sex, birth date, hometown, etc are not shown. LMD
My dh got offered a job in part because he is not on facebook. Aparently some previous employees liked to spend their working hours on facebook, not having it was considered a good, mature sign.
Just Kate
I've been told by our computer guru that many tech savvy people can break into FB accounts inside of a few minutes.I like the "hang out your bloomers and everyone can see them" line. :D I have heard the same thing. While I think it is important to keep your FB privacy settings as strict as possible (allowing just friends to see your posts), I also think it is advisable to assume that anyone *may* be able to see what you are posting. If it is on the Internet - consider it public (even on a "private" page).

One local employer strongly discourages it for both security and time-management reasons. And yes, the head of HR told me that they use a special tool that digs up far more than Google. Just because you can't find yourself with the standard search engines doesn't mean that you aren't out "there."
swellmomma
After reading this, I googled my first and last name and email address...absolutely zero results came up. :D I don't post anything inappropriate, but I still value my privacy. ;) My name only really brought up my pintrest and that I have a facebook account. My email brought up the letter I submitted last spring to the town to ask for funding for the scout troop. Apparently after they got it from me they scanned it, converted to pdf and posted to the town's civicweb. I never knew that even existed. All it shows is a well written letter by someone who is community minded :)
creekland
DH had a friend call in "sick"--he said he had car trouble and couldn't get a ride into work--OK. Employer checked his facebook page, he posted pics of himself and the car at the race track that same day. He was fired. This happened to a student at school, except he told his employer he was going to his Grandma's funeral and actually went bowling. At least he was sharing his experience at school - warning others. My long lost biological sister found me via Facebook. I am so thankful I had my privacy settings set to 'searchable'. I want long lost friends, current friends, whoever, to be able to find me on FB. But of course I do watch what I post.

Again, I don't know if it is true, but I was told by a former boss last summer, a woman I have known for 16 years and who has not lied to anyone that I am aware of, that there is no privacy setting that stops a determined employer from seeing all of your facebook. I do believe her, because the manager of that hotel is a real jerk and I am sure he did check people's facebooks to see what they said about him and the hotel. Yes, But....someone can cut and paste comments/posts and use them if they want to. I worked at at animal clinic where a young employee was fired for posting foul languaged comments about our clinic on his facebook page. None of us were friends with him, but one of his friends knew the sister of one of the other employees or volunteers, and when they saw it they took a screen shot and printed it out and brought it to the owner's attention. So privacy settings are not fool proof. You still need to watch what you say.

I'm willing to bet that people who never log into FB via work computers/network don't get their accounts seen, though I can come up with various conspiracy theories about how it might happen. Nothing is private. The best you can do is live authentically and be aware that if someone wants to find out something about you it really isn't all that difficult to do so. I had a classmate who was certain her landlord had drilled a hole in her wall and watched her undress, too. She was an entirely rational person who seemed very sure. I believed her. Then again, surveys show that about a third of employees look at porn websites while at work. There was an article on sexual abuse towards women in the military in today's NYTimes, and the woman quoted said she went forward multiple times because pornography was being stored on machines meant for classified information. yuck. Although this is a good idea, computers can be broken into, employees get mad and release info they shouldn't, etc. If it is online, assume someone you don't want to see it, can see it. Mama_Rana
Oh gosh, this thread has gotten long, and I haven't read all of the responses yet, but I also wanted to mention that FB keeps changing my privacy settings or something. My default setting is "friends only". I occasionally will post something publicly if I want people to be able to share it more easily or if I'm trying to reach someone who I have otherwise blocked [think current events issues]. After posting publicly I have to make a point to change the setting in my status update box BACK to friends only or I'll suddenly find that I've posted a whole day's worth of status updates publicly :/ Yesterday it happened even though I don't think I posted anything publicly prior; just suddenly my entire day's posts were public. It's frustrating, but it just reiterates: no matter what your privacy settings are, whether you're in a private forum, or posting under a pseudonym, nothing you post on the internet is truly private. People can copy/paste and name you, people can photo-shop and make it look like you've done or said something, etc. Right or wrong, it's the age we live in. :( Laura, I'm glad you got the job. One day I had something to share with a husband and wife (two different accounts) friends of mine...so I changed my settings to just those two. Weeks went by and I was posting my usual updates and mentioning house renovations and my dh's illness....crickets. I was beginning to get paranoid that everyone in my life was ignoring me! Then I realized that I had failed to change my setting BACK to normal (friends only). I posted on my status what I had done and everyone was like, 'we wondered what was going on! Where you went etc.' :tongue_smilie:
