Spelling Mistakes. To correct or not?

DS is reading quite a bit (early reading, BOB Books 2 and the Kindergarten Sight Words series) and lately, he wants to write sentences. On his coloring page at lunch he wrote "I don't think so Mommy" but spelled it "I dunt tink so mommy". He tried to spell my friend Steves name and spelled it "stev"....no biggie...but I am not sure what program to use, if any. He is doing OM1, which is light in LA, but he is obviously thriving. Do I add in something like All About Spelling?...do I correct his spelling mistakes? Should I just let him continue on the way he is?

But based on his age and the informality of his writing, no way would I correct it! It's very sweet and really quite impressive for 4. :) I do think starting him on something like AAS when he's reading fluently is appropriate though.

:iagree: At kindergarten age, I'd simply let him pursue writing for the fun of it. Spelling can wait! If he asks you how to spell something, I'd spell it for him. I waited to start AAS until my DD was reading first and second grade materials.

When DD was at this stage I would correct her occasionally on words that she used all the time. When she brought me her tenth picture of a "hose," I taught her how to spell "horse." I would never correct more than one word on each project and not more than 1-2 times each week. For the most part you just want to encourage him to write and draw. In first grade you can focus more on spelling.

How cute, I love it! Remember when he was learning to talk and said things like "bakie" instead of blanket, and you thought it was adorable and called grandma or your friend or dh? Think of beginning writing the same way and enjoy!

Since he's interested in writing, you certainly could introduce something like AAS. I wouldn't correct spelling on notes at all, but after he's worked on spelling for a year or two, you can start gently correcting words that he has already studied in spelling on some projects. Start small and don't correct everything or it can get overwhelming for early elementary kids--just encourage writing and enjoy mostly. (You can always make a mental note of mistakes and include those words in your spelling review that week.) As he gets older you can give a separate time for editing work that you plan on correcting for spelling.

Enjoy! Merry :-)

I think it's a good idea to start AAS or similar, since he's interested. As far as corrections, I wouldn't make any official corrections, but you could try writing notes back to him with the word(s) spelled correctly. Just seeing the words and helping him, if necessary, to read them will probably be helpful for him.

I don't think I'd rush into correcting him or buying a program yet...my son is also 5 and does the same types of things. I'm going to hold off 'till next year for something more formal; for now, we're still laying the groundwork with phonics and such, and I think it would be overkill to add in a spelling program (for us).

I love his sentence, though. :D Cute! My son can be very literal--phonetically--with his spelling. He was angry with me one day (I completely forget why) as I was making a quick lunch. After we were eating, he snuck my single-serve gluten-free pizza box out of the recycling, crossed out the words "gluten free" on the front and replaced them in marker with "WEET." He then brought me the box and said, "see mommy, this has wheat in it. Uh oh, you already ate it!" I wasn't sure whether to be hurt, angry, or just plain amused, but in the end I had no choice but to be amused.
