huggies goodnights...question

Recommended Posts

my 8 year old son still has frequent accidents at night. As you all know we are headed to Disney tomorrow. I am toying with the idea of having hime wear Huggies Goodnights...instead of risking it and taking our chances with a wet bed everyday. (We could and would bring a water proof mat...but that would mean possibly doing laundry every day...even if we were to bring disposable mats, his PJ's would still get wet and we can't bring multiple pairs of PJ's). But I can't seem to find the kind of Good nights that look sort of like boxer shorts instead of pullups...(thinking that maybe he would buy into the idea easier with those)...does anybody know where I might be able to buy these??? OR Does anybody have a good way to "talk him into this idea"....we do have the kind that are supposed to look like "underwear" but they really only look like glorified training pants (pullups) and he KNOWS it.

I know when it all boils down to it, it is my decision, not his...but I am trying to be sensitive to him as well...he is really upset that this is still happening (although his big brother had the same issue)...he was in tears this morning (4 days in a row having an accident)...he goes in spirts...many days of having acciedents and many days without...no rhymne or reason that I can figure out either. I even take him to the bathroom every night before I go to bed.

ANYWAY...the huggies goodnights are my REAL question/concern for this day...the rest is for another time. THANKS!!!!!

The goodnite boxers are terrible! The boxer material is paper-ish.

As far as getting him to wear it- my ds says just wear it, duh. (He's never been out of diapers at night).

I would address it very matter of fact. His bladder doesnt always sleep when the rest of his body does, and the diaper will prevent some of the need for clean up. It will also prevent him from sleeping in a wet, cold, smelly bed. He's also going to be extra tired and more likely to wet.

Keep in mind that goodnites are very low cut and boys tend to pee out of the top of the diaper. A way to prevent this is by also getting some depends booster pads and putting it horizontal across his belly at the top of the diaper. Easiest way to do this is by putting on the diaper, then putting the pad in.

I would maybe put him in pull ups at home as well since wetting is upsetting him. Maybe he could see a urologist to tell him that it is what it is.

I dont believe in night training. It stops when the body is ready. It could be related to bladder control, sleep disorders, and medical reasons.

Many insurance companies pay for diapers once a kid is a certain age.

Maybe I'm much more permissive than I (or anyone around me) realize because I most certainly would allow it to be his decision! I would, however, encourage him to consider the goodnights because it would make things MUCH easier. However (talk about overusing a word!), it is not a given that you wouldn't have to use the pad and do laundry. My son regularly blew the goodnights when it was him.

he is really upset that this is still happening (although his big brother had the same issue)...he was in tears this morning (4 days in a row having an accident)...he goes in spirts...many days of having acciedents and many days without...no rhymne or reason that I can figure out either. FIRST, it is actually counter-productive to take him to the bathroom before you go to bed. I know your heart is in the right place; but this as well as restricting fluids and many other things people do actually cause more issue.

Second....please consider help. We did every idea on this board and then some (honey, peanut butter, chiropractor, bedwetting clinic, medication, goodnights, pads, him cleaning up, and the list goes on as you can imagine). In the end, in Oct 2009, we used the Enuresis Treatment Center. Yes, it is pricey. But you and kiddo have support with help that makes a difference.

We foster and have decided not to accept babies anymore. If we have a child over 7 who continues for any length of time (obviously, with foster kids, there could be a few other reasons for having day and night time issues), we would go back to using the ETC. Seriously, I would NEVER make a child go through that again now that I know there really is a way to address it and that "growing out of it" is largely a myth (yes, kids stop doing it, but they usually still have the underlying sleep problems that caused it).

Anyway, JMO....

Yes, give son a choice.

Don't expect not to have to do laundry because of it though.

Quit leading him to the bathroom after his bedtime.

Consider fixing this now rather than waiting til he "grows out of it" at 10 or 14 or 19 years old.

Tell him it's better to save on laundry while on vacation and he needs to wear them. Let him wear a pair of regular boxers over top of the goodnights at night - no one will even know that he has the good nights on, so no need to be embarrassed for him.

I would also use the waterproof pad just in case since you haven't practiced with these at home.

The boxer ones didn't work as well as the regular sort, in our experience. The absorbant pad didn't stay in place and we still had a mess. :tongue_smilie:

Pamper's Underjams can be found at Target. The big box is the best deal, and they really work. If he's worried about them being seen, only take pajamas that are on the loose side or a size too big.
