Stayseeliz
Do you worry about hearing your kids in the night? My husband is an insanely heavy sleeper. There was an accident outside our house two weeks ago at 4am and he didn't even flinch. I am a very light sleeper but for the last few months I don't sleep well at all. I toss and turn and feel horrible the next morning. We have a 19mo who is in a crib next to our door that does NOT co-sleep and 5, 8 and 11yo's in the next room. I really feel like I want to try something like a gentle sleep aid but I want to be alert during the night too. Any thoughts?
Wheres Toto
I take a single Advil PM. That's half the normal dose and the sleep aid is the same stuff that's in Benedryl, which I already take during the day for allergies. The 1/2 dose is enough to help me turn off my brain and sleep but not enough to keep me asleep if something happens. I may feel crappy if woken up shortly after falling asleep, but I will wake up. SevenDaisies
I take Ambien on occasion, but when I do, you cannot wake me. I am afraid to take it if my husband is not home.
JessReplanted
I sometimes take 1/2 a benadryl - and I sleep with ear plugs and a white noise machine, and I don't worry about being able to wake up for the kids. When there's a problem, they don't hesitate to wake me up.
Stayseeliz
I think I'm going to try Simply Sleep or something similar. I need sleep! :(
Mommyof4ks
I take magnesium, and it does not make you sleep, it just relaxes your muscles to help you go to sleep and rest. I am normally a very heavy sleeper, so I do not know for sure if it makes a difference in my state of sleep, but I am told is does not. PinkInTheBlue
I take 1/4 of a dose of Simply Sleep and it's just perfect. A dose is 2 pills and I break apart the whole package when I buy it and take one half of one pill each night. It's enough to make me relax but NEVER so much that I can't respond to our guys if they need me in the middle of the night.
T'smom
I take ambien and wake at every little noise. I seriously can't remember the last time I slept through the night.
theYoungerMrsWarde
Even on Ambient my mommy instincts kick in and I wake up even when dh dosen't. It gives me a few minutes of functionality before I start getting drowsy again.
Plateau Mama
When I took Ambien I was still woken if the kids needed me. I wasn't totally functioning, but I could tend to whatever needed tending and still fall back asleep easily. I took 1/2 a pill, so that might be why. I think YMMV because my husband is very difficult to wake when he takes ambien.
Serenade
I have taken low doses of Ambien for years, even when I had babies. All of mine slept in separate rooms by the time they were about 6 weeks old, and I could still hear them if they cried. Now, I took (and take) half of the lowest dose of ambien, so a very small amount. It is enough to help me sleep but not enough to totally knock me out. Although now I sleep deeper than I did then -- I think that most moms are super sensitive when they have infants.

I wish I had read through the thread first, and then I could have just agreed with you!
Stayseeliz
Thanks for the input. I have a dr appointment tomorrow and I'm going to talk to her about options. We aren't co-sleeping anymore and I know I need to take something. I feel like I toss and turn all night and "work" in my sleep. The other night I just kept mentally working on a project for DH that I've been working on all night. I work up so exhausted. I need sleep!
