KristenR
http://www.scistarter.com/ I just found this awesome site. It's the place to find out about, take part in, and contribute to science through recreational activities and research projects. Many of the experiments can be done at home. You can help scientists advance fields of research while standing in line, downloading a Netflix flick, or waiting for your pumpkin pie to warm up. I've seen many free ones and some that charge a small fee to send you out your kit. Definitely worth checking it out.

KristenR
Did you see the mastodon one? It actually requires a small participation fee but sounds so cool I think I might do it.
