Selling on Etsy

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of opening an Etsy shop. I create cards for people all the time and they always tell me I should do it for a job. I never put much thought into it, but now the extra $ would be really nice. I'm just wondering if people actually make any money from selling on Etsy. I think it could take quite a bit of time to get it set up and running, but once that is done I don't think it will take up too much time. I'm just wondering what I can actually expect to make from selling cards.

Any thoughts? Any Etsy advice?

We have a shop but haven't made much money yet. A little yes. We need to make a bigger business so we are looking into crafting shows for next year.

My cousins started an etsy shop a few years ago and now have a b&m store that consist of 2 businesses (soaps/lotions/scents and homemade soda). They also did a lot of local shows to grow their business.

I think you can make money on etsy but it is going to depend on how much effort you want to put into it. Starting an etsy shop is pretty easy so I say get started. If you don't like it you can always close it.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'd like to make enough for spending money and all the little extras that seem to pop up.

I thought it would be easier to just load all of the cards I've already made for people, but they are so customized I'm not sure they will look good with any other pictures. I'm trying to make a few basic cards for Christmas to stock my store.

That sounds good. My other thought is to keep in mind that your pictures need to be really good as that is the only way your customers will see your work. Good pictures will take you a long way.

Starting a shop is easy, technically. What takes time is promoting it. Etsy is only a sales venue, and they won't promote you. You must promote your own work. I've only had my shop open since July, but I have friends who have been there much longer and this is advice they've given me. Also, the advice about photos is excellent advice.

:iagree:

You will need to self-promote at local fairs or shows too. Spread the word about your Etsy store. Put the address on flyers, postcards or hang tags. You will be competing with other Etsy sellers too. Promotion is key.
