Jann in TX
Dd10 spiked a fever with no other symptoms last night. Sure enough, this morning she had small bumps around her nose-- and this afternoon you could see the pus... Round 3 since May! Round 1 In May dd was at a school party that had a water slide. She scraped her knee on the water slide (on Tuesday). Saturday night she spiked a fever of 103 and Sunday her scrap was visibly inflamed-- off to the ER just in time for the red streak to move up her leg. Round 2 In July she spiked another fever-- next day her eyes were red-- 2 days later her face was covered in impetigo--Dr tested it-- positive for Staph. Any suggestions for short term and LONG TERM treatment?... Today I have the anti-biotic cream that helped last time. Urgent care on a Saturday is almost an hour away. Not bad enough for ER. Life always throws us curve balls on weekends!
J9Mommy
I would wash and bleach her pillowcase, towel, and bedding often for a few months. Plus Lysol wipe/spray her room once this episode is over with. Any plush toys that she snuggles with should be sprayed. It sounds ridiculous, but I figure this is the time to do one crazy thorough cleaning. Keep her nails short, and make sure she is not picking her nose. I thought I read you can also put an antibacterial cream in your nose to keep the staph colonization down. Maybe ask the doctor. Staph likes to live there and then kids pick their noses ! There is a wash called Hibicens for the body. I have not used it, but have seen it at Target. I don't think it's for your face though. I wonder if cleaning her face nightly with like witch hazel might work. Or even showering twice a day. Just anyway to keep the bacteria down. Oh, also get her on a good refrigerated probiotic. Try your health store. Garlic and other spices/herbs are also good natural antibacterials. Elderberry boosts your immune system as well, but is expensive. Not sure if this helps. Hope you guys can get it under control soon. Edited October 20, 2012 by J9Mommy ipad typing..eek

I was going to suggest Hibiclens for handwashing and for washing any wounds.
Guest TheNorthWind
My daughter has had four staph infections. She hates getting them and is now a nearly obsessive hand washer. I started her on grapefruit seed extract. She also eats yogurt and/or probiotic supplement. Right after every infection I do colloidal silver spray every day for a week or so. Not sure what exactly helps the most but I think it might be the hand washing. :)
RobinF
If you can find a health food store that has turmeric (the spice) in capsules, I would give her those. Also you can take turmeric and mix it either antibiotic ointment or cocoanut oil and put that topically on the spots. We have effectively treated staph/impetigo with turmeric. The only warning is that used topically it will stain things yellow so be aware if she is sleeping on something you don't want stained. klmama
This isn't the usual type of treatment, but maybe you're ready for the unusual. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/10/14/dr-rowen-oxidative-medicine.aspx?e_cid=20121014_SNL_Art_1
countrygal
Maybe the whole family should be tested and/or treated if they are carriers. Or she should be treated for a longer course of antibiotics. What kind of staph? MRSA? I heard of a family who's dog was the carrier of strep and kept getting their little one sick with strep. And do the sanitizing/hibiclens washing definately!
jeninok
We are at round 3 of staph this year at our house too. It seems to happen whenever we are run down now. This time it started as allergies that turned into a horrid sinus infection, then I had a nasty breakout of weeping sores on my chin and cheek. I got the wrong antibiotics on Monday when I went to the doctor and continued to get worse until Thursday when I went back. By the time I got back in, the skin on my chin was almost falling apart everytime I dabbed it with a tissue, and I had a good start to pneumonia. So I would say she needs to be ASAP, it can probably wait until Monday if she doesn't have any other symptoms, get worse, or her fever spikes too high. You need to make sure they give her a long enough dose of proper antibiotics. Currently I am on a month of Doxycycline, because it works for the strain I seem to be carrying, as well as the Mucipiron ointment on any scraped, pimples, and in my nose. DS has a note that they will call in an rx if he shows any symptoms since we tend to pass it back and forth. I am actually going to toss my pillow after I am totally healed up, and I have been washing my pillowcases daily in the hottest setting and drying on high. I agree with washing all bedding and fabric, and if you can't wash some pillows or her stuffed animals maybe putting them in the dryer on high for as long as you safely can would help. I don't know that I would trust Lysol. I'm also washing towels after each use right now, and making sure no one is sharing them. I cleaned our bathroom top to bottom then wiped it down with hydrogen peroxide as well as all doorknobs and stuff. I agree with the Hibicleanse, we are all using it right now on our hands and bodies, you could dilute it some and rinse her face with it too. I have used it on my chin and cheek and it doesn't hurt. But I put it in a little squeeze bottle with some water and just squirt it on. Scrubbing could break it back open and spread the yuckies! The Bandaid wash with lidocaine in it is a godsend too, it doesn't heal it for me, but it is cooling and numbs it and stops the itching and burning for a while. I also chunked my foundation, and concealer, and washed my brushes with hibicleanse. She probably doesn't have those at 10, but if she has any face lotion or anything similar that could possibly be contaminated I would toss it! ETA: I am also using colloidal silver on my owies, and the nose spray. I'm not supposed to use the RX ointment in my nose until the scabs are healed and the swelling is gone. momtoamiracle
Wash all bedding and towels in hot water, boil toothbrush daily. Maybe wash with tea tree oil. I agree on probiotics, elderberry syrup, and somehow incorporate coconut oil in her diet. Spreading extra virgin coconut oil on toast is really good. StartingOver
I don't know if you have used Bactrium in the nose, but hubby had multiple staph infections after his heart stents. On the last one he continued to use the bactrium cream in his nose for a month. He has not had a staph infection in over 2 years now. One doctor we went to said it did no good, but our family doctor believed it did. I have to agree. We also washed everything in the house in very hot water, cleaned all the walls, carpets, and furniture. A full on hot spring cleaning. The last 2 had to be drained and packed for weeks at a time, because the antibiotics just weren't cutting it alone.
Oakblossoms
You could try a bleach bath.
Liz CA
Have you tried colloidal silver? Also Oil of Oregano - but this needs to be taken in hot tea since you cannot swallow it by itself. Both of these are anti-bacterial agents that do not cause resistance like so many antibiotics do.
butterflymommy
My kids get chronic staph infections though they only get the fever if it turns into cellulitis. We wash bathrooms with bleach, never share or reuse towels, I try to get them to take a hot shower every day with AB soap, we do bleach baths on the worst ones. We have hand sanitizer all over the house. All towels and sheets get washed with bleach. You might want to get DD tested for autoimmune disease. My son may be in early stage lupus which could explain some of his recurring infections. All of my kids have eczema to some degree and people with eczema lack a natural antibiotic in their skin that other people have. So if there are any underlying skin conditions try to treat those as best you can.
kalanamak
On the last one he continued to use the bactrium cream in his nose for a month. I'm not sure what bactrium cream is, but the Sanford Guide standard is hibiclens scrubs for ?3 days and bactroban to nostrils, armpits, and groin for some number of days ??10. I have seen nasal carriage eliminated that way several times.
