HappyGrace
We've always made sure through Dec to do some type of Advent thing to help keep Christ in Christmas. We've done the Jesse Tree for years, loved the Jotham's Journey books, did a unit study one yr, etc. (besides of course service things that we do-I'm just focusing here on studies or reading or home activities.) Now we need something that is more in depth for dd almost 13 and ds almost 10. Any ideas?
Chris in VA
Hmmm--brain storming... Research St. Francis (he did the first "manger scene" as a teaching to his villager friends) Find out the historical church origins of certain traditons (Why did the Church pick Dec. 25th? Why were some pagan symbols adopted?) Look at Catholic vs Protestant doctrines/beliefs about Mary (this may be more late MS) Look up the word Incarnation and see what it means--why is this different from other religions? Read some research about the Christmas Star--what it could have been, and how Christ was probably not born in 1AD. Make sure to use more than one source for research. Maybe you could have them ask family members and neighbors for Christmas memories--taking Oral Histories is an important Logic stage skill. Likewise, you could gather recipes from others, make a few, print out/design a small recipe booklet to give away. These may not seem like they "keep Christ in Christmas," but listening to and caring about others is a way of loving your neighbor, and that is definitely part of keeping Christ in Christmas! HappyGrace
LOVE love love these ideas-thanks for taking the time to post! BTW, there is a great movie about the Bethlehem star-just what you said-and very faith edifying. I think we saw it on Netflix? We loved it!
