s/o Alternatives to Granite

Recommended Posts

We rent currently but I watch a lot of House Hunters. :tongue_smilie:

What are good, quality alternatives to granite counter tops? It seems that 80% of the people buying on HH want granite counter tops only. There must be other materials that are good quality and look nice as well, right?

We have butcher block counters from Ikea, sealed with Waterlox. We installed them almost a year ago and like them a lot. They are easy to clean (just a microfiber cloth dampened with water) and aren't as fussy as granite can be. They have more of a warm, "cottage-y" look which might not work in all kitchens or for every style but we've gotten many compliments on ours.

I think it has just become such a status symbol because it is so much nicer than the standard Formica.

Is it just me or have the people on HH gotten so much more irritating and demanding than they used to be?

:iagree: I hate watching anymore because they have such a long wish list of things that are totally unrealistic. You can change paint color or carpet- why do you care if its hot pink carpet with stains and poo colored walls? Maybe I was raised differently, but you can change just about anything with a house. It also doesnt HAVE to be done on move in! You can tear down that wall later, you can change the cabinets later. :glare:

Yes, I don't know. I like watching the show just because I like seeing all the different types of houses, styles, etc... We hope to buy in a couple of years so it has helped me sort out my little (realistic!) wish list.

That's good to know about the tile because I am in SoCal. My only concern would be ease of cleaning.

The bamboo counter-tops are pretty.
