Hunter's Moon
This is just something I've been kicking around for a bit but I'm not sure if I'll even decide to go vegetarian. I have allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and all legumes (soy, peas, beans of any sort). I do eat dairy (mainly yogurt and cheese). I use rice milk as a substitute for milk because lactose intolerance. Have been considering switching to oat milk. Would it be possible to become vegetarian when allergic to all legumes and all nuts? Meat has been really starting to gross me out lately. I'm very picky about meat, and it seems like it may just be easier to go vegetarian IF I could make up a meal plan that would allow me all the protein and other nutrients I need. If I can't come up with a way to make up for the loss in protein, I may just cut way back on meat consumption. Any and all help appreciated :001_smile:
CheerioKid
Not earth shattering, but quinoa is full of protein, if you haven't tried it, it is a neat little grain....cooks like rice, but feels lighter. It has a distinct flavor, but seems to blend pretty well with other flavors. We haven't gone strictly vegetarian, but are trying to eat less meat. At the moment, I am simply not buying any meat to cook at home, but if we are eating elsewhere we get whatever we want. No allergies here though, so I can't really help in that department. LittleIzumi
You can use dairy and eggs and still be vegetarian. It will be less healthy that way then with beans and such. A lot of people choose pescatarian and eat fish as their only meat. I gave up vegetarianism because we not only had allergies to all nuts but to all dairy and egg whites, too. HappyLady
I definitely think it's possible, you'll just have to pay more attention to your diet. Can you do foods like grains, quinoa, seitan, and eggs? I'm assuming you can do all fruits and veggies, right? You can make some really nutrient dense yogurt smoothies with fruits, veggies, hemp and flax seeds. If you're still consuming dairy and eggs I wouldn't worry about protein (only because of your other restrictions). You'll get all your other vitamins and minerals from fruits and veggies, just make sure to eat/drink a lot of them. I'd also maybe take a multi-vitamin just to be safe. Try it for awhile, see how you feel, and go from there. Good luck! :)
Parrothead
Sure. Lots of amino acids in other foods (veggies/fruit/grains) for your body to produce protein. Be sure to take a B12 supplement since that only comes from meat and eggs.
VeganCupcake
Sure you can. It will take a bit more planning, like PPs mentioned. Are you allergic to hemp? Hemp milk and hemp seeds are very nutritious, containing lots of healthy fats and a good amount of protein. What about coconut (which is not really a nut)? crazyforlatin
From about 25 to 31, I could not eat meat due to the smell of raw meat during preparation and just wanted to make a statement about killing animals. Although I'm not allergic to anything, I didn't actually eat nuts and beans then. I ate fish and eggs for protein and I think it was enough for me. crazyforlatin
Definitely add in B12.... My parents are pure vegetarians for religious reasons, and have been for years, but they take supplements and need B12.

So you didn't want to kill animals, but it was okay to kill fish? Fish are animals too! Haven't you seen NEMO- "Fish are our friends."

She's reluctant to eat meat now, but given her age, I still get a say what she can eat or not.
Bang!Zoom!
As a girl who's filled out a hefty $$ buck or two on the protein issue - I'd kinda recommend actually going to a dietitian worth their salt and getting a very personalized view of lifestyle w/protein requirements that are customized. It's gonna get complicated as you wade through the various stages/places and needs for protein throughout a regular or irregular day. Get your notebook out, your gonna need it. It's a lot to chart. Haven't you seen NEMO- "Fish are our friends." Lots of pescetarians feel this way. My pescetarian 11 yo is very troubled by animal welfare, but has no problem chopping off fish heads. I used to be vegan/veg/pescetarian for most of my life. I have been in many veg groups. Most people do see a distinction. I am NOT starting a debate. Just saying that its normal for many people to be ok with it. :001_smile:
