Feeling low after doctor visit this morning.

Recommended Posts

I've gained 12 pounds since the end of April. Nothing significant has changed in my diet and exercise amounts.

She's a new doctor. My mom loves her. It took me 5 years to get up the guts to go as it is. Basically, she figured I was seeking a quick fix or pills or something. She wrote me off. She said if I'm gaining weight, I'm eating too much. And then she continued on and on about portion control. She did order labs, but seemed to think that everything will come back fine.

I feel completely and utterly defeated. And this is why I don't go to doctors. Ugh. And now I can't stop crying.

:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:. I have complained about weight problems for years along with other problems common with hypothyroidism and autoimmune hypothyroidism is very common (more than 40%) with my other autoimmune disease. It wasn't until I started getting so bad that my INR went up and down like crazy (and it commonly only does that with thyroid problems) and I went back to internal medicine, and they then found out that I had an enlarged thyroid with two nodules but still didn't send me to a specialist. After more troubles with my blood, and now my family thinking I am going senile, I now have an appointment with an endocrinonologist in Dec.

I really hope you get some answers and I have found that many doctors are lazy and don't want to do detective work.

:grouphug: I know the feeling! I get so tired of doctors tellin me to just eat better and exercise more. I *know* that - I have a degree in kinesiology for Heaven's sakes!

Did the doc mention checking thyroid function? I am on thyroid meds and it has definitely helped with my energy level and controlling any further weight gain.

Yes, she did order a routine lab panel plus a thryoid panel. Now I have to get up the guts to go get the blood drawn.

Kalah,

Please go for your blood work. I gained 80 pounds without any dietary changes. It took going to 4 Dr's over 4 years to find one who did a complete thyroid panel to discover that I have Hashimoto's. The other Dr's all gave me the lecture about stress and portion control etc etc. I've lost almost 60 lbs! I do think a lot of Dr's seem to think that people just want pills and don't want to investigate. At least your Dr. has ordered blood work for you. Please follow through on it. It's a starting point.

I get so tired of working to get into the doctor only to be put off or sent around to another doctor who also does nothing. It just frustrates me that I keep putting out time and money, but nothing changes.

:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:

I understand. I hope you get some answers and help for whatever is the root of the problem.

Go get the blood drawn! If's it thyroid issues it will show up and then she will be able to help you. Doesn't justify her attitude and I think she treated you poorly but you still need to advocate for your own health. :grouphug::grouphug:

Go for the blood work... ask for a copy for your own records.. and then bring your blood work results to a naturopath for a more in-depth discussion and action plan..

I always expect the same dismissive attitude from main-stream medical doctors - many of them only know to subscribe meds or shuffle you on to a specialist... I ONLY go to them for diagnostic testing or for prescriptions or to get referred to a specialist...

So sorry you had a bad experience. I feel bad for people that have lousy dr.s. I have such awesome drs in my town I wish everyone could get the care our family has received. Certainly get that blood work. I ad overwhelming fatigue so my dr tested vitamin D-levels were low so she put me on prescription vitamin D. It has made a difference.

Your thyroid may not show anything right now, but could in a few years. My sister finally went to an endocrinologist and they discovered her thyroid was practically dead.

Wow, I'm angry for you!:glare:

I would really suggest you read (or listen to, my library has the audio book) Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes.

http://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Get-Fat-About/dp/0307474259/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350587234&sr=8-1&keywords=why+we+get+fat

At the very least, it will make you see how wrong she is about this part:

She said if I'm gaining weight, I'm eating too much. And then she continued on and on about portion control.

You know, some of the best advice I ever got came from an English professor. He told us, when writing papers, "Don't tell me what any s@#$head knows." That advice has done well by me for a lifetime. Someone needs to tell that doctor the same thing.

I am so sorry. You need some actual medical care and you got an incurious idiot who treats her practice like a bus station. Get the blood work, ask for a copy of the results and go see someone better. Ask around and find out what doctor in town is willing to talk to you like a human being. And if your blood work does show something, don't go back to her. She has lost the privilege of treating you.

I am in agreement. Weigh gain is often a symptom. If someone is only treating symptoms then they will not find the cure. I would find a different Dr.

Thanks, everyone. I've still be teary all day. I've scheduled the blood work for next Thursday. It's fasting and that's the first available day I could get an appointment before noon.:glare:

I will go get it done. And ask for a copy. And not go back to her. My mom feels terrible that she recommended her and I had a bad experience. It's really not her fault. Mom is trying to find me someone else.

PLEASE GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR!!!!

Did you read my post about my cancer diagnosis? I went to a doctor last summer with the same complaint. I was not losing weight even though I was exercising regularly and keeping track of everything I ate in a food log. My energy levels were low. My feet were constantly swollen. I thought something was wrong with my thyroid. Same thing- the doctor told me I had to be "honest with myself" about what I was actually eating. When I told him I swam in my pool every day, he said I needed a pool big enough to swim laps. When I told him I had a standard inground pool that was 18' x 36', he said that I actually needed to swim laps and not just play with my kids. He was a real pr!ck to me. He told me my feet were swollen because I was heavy. He wasn't listening to me at all. I left his office in tears. All my labs came back normal, too, so I gave up.

If you have a feeling something is wrong, it probably is. Keep going until someone will listen and take you seriously.

And you have to whine and pout and carry on until the doctor does not only TSH but also T3 and T4. My TSH always come back within normal ranges, but when I whine about it enough to a new doctor who then reluctantly does the other, turns out that, yeah, I'm actually hypothyroid.

Do it now. I've been undermedicated for 20 years, and it takes a long time to do a turn-around. :glare:

I'm so sorry! Please try to remember that this isn't about any failing on your part. This doctor clearly doesn't care about you, because she didn't take the time to actually listen to what you had to say. She didn't try to help you.

I'm glad to hear that you're going for the blood work, and that you're going to find another doctor.

Again, please don't cry. You're such a nice person and I hate to see you feeling so sad and upset. :grouphug:

Make sure the lab work includes T3 and T4, not just TSH.

What a BEE-ATCH! (rhymes w/ witch in case you didn't know). I'm so sorry, Kalah. Doc's like that are the reason I don't like to go either. I Just went in to see mine, and I whined for a week before going in. Now he's sending me to an endo. Oh, freaking goody. I'm already gearing up for a fight.

:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I'm sorry the lady was mean.

Can I ask them to add T3 and T4 to the panel at the lab? Or do I have to call the doctor? I don't have any paperwork. It's all done through the health insurance's sytem. I just show up.

I'm 41 to answer that question. And I thought being on BCP was messing with the weight. I came off it 3 weeks ago (my dh is oh, so happy) and understand it will take 3 months for my body to regulate. I don't think this is the cause of the weight gain though, just a contributing factor. I've been on this type for 5-6 years. I just think it's a combination of stuff. My mom says to take it easy on myself. I've got so, so much going on. I'm not that gracious with myself, especially about weight. This is the heaviest I've been since I lost 50 pounds after my oldest was born. I vowed never to let myself get heavy again. And now, my body is getting heavy with out me allowing it.

Unicorn, I'm sorry you have to go. I know just how you feel. To add insult to injury, my co-pay for doctor's visits is $50. Nice, huh?
