HappyGrace
Not sure what has been happening-he's been fairly calm most of his life-plays Legos, etc. Typical boy-not a bookworm, etc-but fairly low key. Now over maybe the last 4-5 months he is making tons of weird noises with his mouth, much louder, clapping loudly, etc. He is having a hard time sitting still during school, loses focus, etc. None of this was a problem before! It is almost like he is overtired-this has been behaviors we have seen somewhat in the past when he's tired. He gets good sleep though. He also eats a great diet-all organic and no processed foods, colorings, etc. It's weird-almost like it is nervous behaviors. It's getting worse and driving us nuts! What I'm thinking as possibilities: 1. His school day is a lot longer this year, with harder work 2. Part of it could be not playing hard enough? This did start during the summer though when he WAS playing outside a lot with no school, sot I don't think that's it. 3. Maybe too many carbs, not enough protein? I'm thinking it's not that the school day is too long because he starts in with it first thing in the morning-can't sit still during Bible. I know boys sometimes have trouble with this, but he never has before! He would sit and listen and comment. Now he has ants in his pants and doesn't concentrate. We've tried treating it as a discipline issue and that makes the nervous type behaviors worse. Has anyone else had this happen out of the blue with a boy this age? Any ideas for supplements that can help too?
Crimson Wife
Systemic yeast infection perhaps? This article is about yeast infection in autistic kids, but the basic idea is the same in non-autistic kids.
HappyGrace
Came back to say he is 4th grade, so the schoolwork did take a jump up. Thanks Crimson-will go read article!
Starr
Breaks to run around the house. :D Really exercise helps.
my2boysteacher
I saw a lot of changes in my boys around that age. Definitely more active, harder time focusing and concentrating. Maybe hormones kicking in? We have a little trampoline that they go jump on between subjects. It really helps them re-focus and get some wiggles out. Karen in CO
That is a good age to start adding additional physical activity. My ds had a terrific ps school teacher for 4th and 5th. She'd have the kids run around the classroom and do jumping jacks frequently during the day - it was the only way she could hope to keep their focus. Joanne
If he was somewhat prone to attention/energy issues before, caffeine may help.
HappyGrace
Hmmm...I hadn't thought of hormones this early, but I guess it makes sense. He is starting to get stinky armpits :tongue_smilie: (he will be 10 in Feb.) I will start with the jumping jacks and exercise breaks tomorrow and see if that helps! Will also get on the lookout for a fitness trampoline! Crimson-he does fit many of those yeast symptoms-going to start probiotics tomorrow too and see if that helps. Please feel free to keep the ideas coming!!! We really want to try to help him with this asap.
JudoMom
If he was somewhat prone to attention/energy issues before, caffeine may help. But be prepared for it to only exacerbate the issue :willy_nilly: :001_huh::lol:. Are you sure he's sleeping well? I just had my ds10 in for a sleep study, but don't have the results yet. He'll sleep the longest of almost all my boys, but they're thinking he doesn't sleep well.

My restless, noise-making boys only got worse around that age. :glare:
Tiramisu
You may want to google PANDAS. It's an autoimmune reaction to a strep infection. Sometimes you know there's been strep; sometimes you don't know there has been. You will get unusual neurological symptoms. If you read up on it and it fits at all, you can ask your pediatrician for a strep test and a blood test to check titers.

ebunny
Has anyone else had this happen out of the blue with a boy this age? Any ideas for supplements that can help too? My 7 yr old DD exhibits some of the behaviors you mention. I give her a cal-mag chew-able with meals. I've had great luck with "Natural Calm" magnesium powder too. It's the magnesium that calms her down, helps her sleep-restfully- and stay focused.
swellmomma
I find the 9 year change to be so challenging. All my kids especially my boys got more intense, obnoxious and argumentative at age 9. By 10-11 they started to slow the hyperness back down, just in time to get even crankier than ever as puberty hit. Lots of boundary testing I have found at 9, like suddenly the rules were changing just because they don't feel like one of the little kids anymore.
