scrapbabe
My boys have expressed an interest in learning about mythical creatures. Does anyone have any fun activities, resources, read-a-loud ideas for this topic? Ages 7 and 12. Thanks.
RootAnn
Our local library has this book: The art of drawing dragons : mythological beasts and fantasy creatures by Michael Dobrzycki. If your kids like to draw, it is a fun book. Have you already gone through books like, D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths"? Check your library to see what they have. (And, I'm giving you a *bump* to see if someone else will give you other ideas.)
Cynful
Not sure how you are with Harry Potter but we are reading through a book right now that would be a great jumping off point for alot of magical creatures. http://www.amazon.com/Magical-Worlds-Harry-Potter-revised/dp/0425223183/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350079386&sr=8-1&keywords=the+magical+world+of+harry+potter Good luck,
Jayne J
Ds is also into mythical creatures. Here are some of his favorites: Monsterology Dragonology:bringing up baby dragons Drakes Comprehensive Compendium of Dragonology Fantasy Encyclopedia Tales of the Cryptids A Natural History of the Unnatural World The last two are more about cryptozoology (Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster etc. ) than mythological beasts like Pegasus or the Hydra, if you get me. Monsterology seems to give the best survey of lots of different kinds of mythical beasts but the are all..well, monsters. No unicorns etc. The whole Ologies series is beloved by my children. The Fantasy Encyclopedia is pretty comprehensive.
Karen in CO
My older dd has been enjoying Giants, Monsters & Dragons for a few years. It isn't illustrated, but contains a lot of information.
