Sunshine State Sue
So, my 12yo ds has been complaining about his mattress. It is old. Ds is convinced, through the fine sales job on TV, that he wants a TempurPedic mattress. Of course, when we look and he sees the prices, he knows it ain't gonna happen. He is convinced he wants a foam mattress. I am not a shopper. I went to the library and looked at Consumer Reports, but they have no reviews. So, there's Mattress Dr, that sells Dormia that's foam at a reasonable price. 25 year warranty. But, according to the pushy Mattress Giant salesman, there are all sorts of terrible things wrong with them. Anybody care to share some advice? Thanks! Ikea has foam mattresses, of course they are not Tempurpedic, but they should be ok. for kids. Jet
shalom22
We have a Tempurpedic, love it. We got the kids Sealy Posterpedic (sp?). They really like it. It was much less expensive than a Tempurpedic
asta
As part of a job I once did, I had to tour a foam manufacturer's factory. It was fascinating. The thing I found the most interesting is that foam is made in a manner quite similar to bread, right down to the loaf pans (which are HUGE). Every type of foam has a 'starter' (similar to yeast), a liquid (like milk or water), a solid (like flour), and a tempering agent (like salt). It is the differences in quantities of most of these (and molecular structure, in the case of the solid) that give us the different types of foams that we see. However, ultimately, foam is foam. What we all know as "TempurPedic" is simply a brand name for visco-elastic foam. Kind of like "Bayer" aspirin. Ultimately, though, visco-elastic foam is visco-elastic foam. The only differences one may find are in the "strength" - eg: some are rated to hold more weight than others and are therefore 'stiffer'. All that said, I have a natural latex (NOT visco-elastic) foam mattress from IKEA and absolutely adore it. Unlike visco-elastic, which can get a bit hot due to being synthetic, it is incredibly cool. I paid big bucks for it, though. IKEA has other ones that aren't as pricey that are also comfy that have good warranties. asta
Mom2GirlsTX
If he really likes Tempurpedic, then consider a memory foam topper. Now these are not all created equal, and certainly some are no more stable than a mushed marshmallow. You would need close to 4lbs weight to find one that is similar in stability to Tempurpedic. I simply love our memory topper, we have had one about 3 years, recently bought another new one for another bed through Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=memory+topper If his mattress is in reasonably good shape, I would highly encourage you to just get a topper. If you spend the money on a good topper you will still be out $100 of dollars LESS than if you bought a whole new mattress set. Google search mattress toppers at fatwallet.com and you can come up with alot of information. I really encourage you to consider a GOOD quality topper (not the cheapy kind from Walmart). Spy Car
When we were looking for a new bed several of my wife's friends said "YOU MUST get a Tempurpedic!!!" We looked at them and decide they weren't for us. Several months later both her friends called us to see what we'd purchased because they'd decided they didn't like Tempurpedics. :glare::001_smile: Mileage may vary, Bill

The memory foam is warmer than a regular mattress, so that is something to consider. For me though, the memory foam topper helps me sleep well with no joint pain. Our mattress was new and top of the line, but it hurt my back, so putting the memory foam topper on it made it perfect:001_smile:
