mamato3
we have a very strong genetic tendency for high cholesterol from both sides of our family (we are all thin and eat very well). I need to take my DD6 and DS4 for follow-up testing in a few months and I'm wanting to try something (other than diet which is already good) to improve their numbers. I'm going to try cod liver oil per the pediatrician's recommendation. anyone have any other recommendations?
Denisemomof4
Garlic. There is more..... Perhaps a good google search is in order. Aside from animal products (all) carbs can also increase numbers, sometimes significantly.
brownie
Yummy lentil soup brought mine and dh's down. I was "threatened" with meds in my teens. However, also research the lack of evidence of link between genetic high cholesterol and heart disease. I think the jury's still out on this on. AND did you have LDL and HDL checked? the ratio is what is important. My good cholesterol is always very good when they bother to have it checked. HappyGrace
We have this too-dd12's chol is genetically high (even though extremely thin and has eaten basically NO processed food and all organic her whole life.) We do Carlson's The Very Finest Fish Oil, vitamin E, flaxseed oil, etc. But our ped, who knows our diet, said not to worry about it-just teaching them these healthy habits is the best thing to do. We've never had them retested (ds was about 4 and dd about 7 when dh had his heart attack and we had them tested per dh's doc's recommendation.) AND good news for your dd-our ped said that for the girls it is sometimes a help when they get to puberty and their estrogen kicks in because that can help with the chol numbers. I wish I had more recommendations for you-I know there are things like red yeast rice, etc., that help but they are more for adults. ETA: Why are they retesting? They're not recommending meds at that age, are they? I personally would NOT do that!! Edited October 8, 2012 by HappyGrace
