Any experience with Algebra I from the Teaching Company?

Recommended Posts

I got their sale catalog yesterday, and I'm thinking about getting this as a refresher for my ds. He's a senior this year, and he's planning on going to community college when he finishes. He has no desire whatsoever to take his SAT's, so he'll be required to take their entrance test. He finished Algebra 1 and is now doing Geometry, but he wants an Algebra refresher so he doesn't have to take it at the CC.

He's such a bright kid, but he's been math phobic since he was six!

Any input?

Donna, I have this on vhs and you are welcome to have it, someone gave it to me and since I'm now using Chalkdust I don't need it. I believe the first tape has a few lessons that have no audio for some reason, but the rest are fine. Send me a PM or email.

algebra refresher; we used it as a supplement, but I didn't find it as helpful as I would have liked.

Even though your son isn't interested in the SAT's, you might possibly consider Chalkdust's SAT Math Review (if you can find it used) or their Algebra I DVD set (also used, if possible). I think the latter especially might be more incremental and possibly more helpful for a review. Your son wouldn't have to work through the problems, necessarily; just watching the lessons would be helpful. Dana Mosely is a very good teacher.

Here's a list that I pulled up from the Sale & Swap board after doing a search on Chalkdust Algebra.

However, Karenciavo's offer sounds awfully good, so I can understand your interest there!

P.S. I don't know how the "thumbs up" symbol got to the top of my post; I wasn't trying to give this post an extra boost!

It does not appear anyone really answered your question about the TC Alg I course. We have it on DVD. IMO it is best done AFTER covering AlG I as a review. As with a TI-83 calculator in hand as the prof. uses a blown up/ close view of a TI-83 to show you how to work a majority of the problems.

The course is interesting. She throws in dome history of algebra as well. But if you are just starting out in algebra and really do not know what the heck she is talking about you can get lost rather quickly and end up not enjoying what could be a rather enjoyable if not intersting review of Alg. I / instruction in the use of graphing calculators and preperation for standardized testing.

The price is not bad either. Get it and save it for the last part of the year...........

HTH,

Chelsea
