suzziesnowflake
A few families are getting together at my house at the end of the month and I am looking for some ideas. Last year one lady did a presentation on bats and then the kids built a bat house. At my house we all carved pumpkins and had lunch. This year I am looking to combine something educational and fun. The kids ages range in 8-14, there will be 8 kids. I thought about doing something along Halloween tradition but one of the families do not like Halloween. Can the wonderful minds here come up with something for older kids? :bigear:
Catwoman
A few families are getting together at my house at the end of the month and I am looking for some ideas. Last year one lady did a presentation on bats and then the kids built a bat house. At my house we all carved pumpkins and had lunch. This year I am looking to combine something educational and fun. Can the wonderful minds here come up with something for older kids? :bigear: It's unfortunate that one of the families doesn't like Halloween, but if past presentations have been about bats and carving jack-o-lanterns, it sounds like a Halloween party to me! :001_smile: How about painting pumpkins? The kids who wanted to make jack-o-lantern type designs could do that, and the other kids could decorate them with a fall theme or something. It's hard when one family is different and you're trying to accommodate everyone, but I also don't think that one family's objections should be permitted to ruin the Halloween fun for everyone else. Is the other family anti-Halloween for strict religious reasons or something? This reminds me of when a friend told me that their local firehouse always had a party for the people in town, with cider and doughnuts, and the highlight of the evening was when Santa arrived on the fire truck with a big bag of gifts for the kids (just little silly stuff.) Well, one of the newer firemen said that because his family didn't do the Santa thing, there should be no visit from Santa at the party, because his kids would be excluded. Ummm... no. One family can't ruin it for everyone. Edited October 6, 2012 by Catwoman

Chris in VA
Maybe something with an apple theme? Could you print apples on tote bags? Could you taste different apples and graph your favorites? Make spiced cider? Cut up apples for apple crisp and then share it? Slice apples and make garlands that will dry? Think more fall-ish than Halloween-ish? Could you make felted acorns? THey are so cute! Maybe skip over the Halloween thing completely and do something to get ready for Thanksgiving? Could you decorate mason jars and make "thankful jars"--have them cut little slips of paper in fall colors and store in an envelope, to be written on once a day from Nov 1 to TG. They write something they are thankful for and put it in the jar. On TG, they put the jar on the table and someone reads all of them out loud--it's a fun family thing to do. Or you can write something nice about a person each day and then give it to them on TG.
