Stayseeliz
We treated the puppies for fleas two weeks ago and DH used Enforcer Flea Spray for the backyard (but he didn't do the front). The puppies have fleas on them when they come in from outside. We give them a bath on blue Dawn and use a flea spray but we need something to kill them in the yard. Thankfully we don't have any carpet so they aren't an issue inside yet. But I'm afraid they will be soon. Thanks for advice!
Ellie
You have to use a dip on the puppies (if they're old enough), plus you have to spray front and back yards, plus you have to bomb the house. Then you have to do it again in 10 days. Really.
Jpoy85
diatomaceous earth (NOT pool grade) works on fleas/ticks. You also HAVE to treat and RE-treat everything. Bedding, dog, yard, etc.
Stayseeliz
Do I need to retreat everything in the house even if we see no flease in the house? They are tethered in two areas and never have access to the bedrooms, etc.

Bedding, dog, yard, etc. :iagree: food grade. Be very, very careful with what you use on the puppies. I bathed my puppy in Hartz puppy shampoo, JUST shampoo, not for fleas, and he was 11 months old at the time. He got a skin infection over hald his body and now is full of scabs weeks later. He will be on steroids until the end of the month. Harts shampoo ANT flea treatments have killed a LOT of dogs and cats.
Stayseeliz
We sprayed the entire yard down with Enforcer and I got Enforcer spray for the inside of the house. I spray down the rug, couch, all the baseboard and I washed all bedding, pillows, etc. I also cut up a flea collar and put it in the vacuum bag and vacuumed the whole house. I got Sentry flea shampoo and we gave them a bath and used the flea comb on them. Crossing my fingers.

Stayseeliz
Okay I'm going insane. I found at least 1-2 dozens fleas on them each tonight. The issue is not inside-it's outside. They didn't even spend much time outside today but they have to be walked. What can I do to get the fleas out of the yard???? I'm going insane!! StephanieZ
Get them on Comfortis or Trifexis. Chewable tablets. 100% awesomeness. No more fleas. Kills them all in hours. Keeps killing for a month! Can't wash off! Pesticide free, so no poison exposure for your family. Easy, tidy, awesome. You will NOT regret it! Trust me on this! What else can I use on them? from here: Flea Med What results can I expect? Advantage Multi will kill the immature heartworms the dog was exposed to in the preceding month. It will treat an intestinal infection with adult hookworms and roundworms. It will kill adult fleas. If the pet was already infested with fleas when Advantage Multi was applied, you may see fleas for up to 6 weeks after application as the immature forms of the fleas in the environment hatch. ------- See bolded parts! You really need something for ALL flea stages.
jeninok
Keep the grass mowed as short as you possibly can, so that sunlight can penetrate and then at night give it a good thorough soaking to help drown them. We use the granules from the hardware store and a spreader in the yard this year and it really worked. Also flea meds available at the vet cost more, but are much much safer and save you money in the long run. You can also bathe your pup just using Dawn dish soap, it works great and is much more gentle. This is especially important when you have to do repeated baths during an infestation! I see you used advantage multi, I'd talk to your vet about adding program for the larval stage, or comfort is as an adult flea nuclear bomb. Seriously the stuff is amazing. I treat my three dogs. No fleas anywhere...ever.
CheerioKid
Comfortis is awesome! Doesn't work on ticks though. Sevin dust is supposed to do a really good job of killing fleas outside, but it kills everything else too. We used it once, but moved out of the house almost immediately after using it, so I can't say first hand what I think about it. We used Sevin dust outside and Sentry spray inside, and treated the dog with Comfortis. All I know is the owners never called us back for a professional flea treatment, so it must have worked...LOL! You can get it at your farm store or Southern States, Home Depot/Lowes might have it, too. http://www.amazon.com/Garden-Tech-Sevin-Shaker-Canister/dp/B006O8OW2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349691733&sr=8-1&keywords=sevin+dust
Stayseeliz
I'm going to call the vet about Comfortis today. I can't handle the fleas. I think I'm going to get Bayer Complete for the yard as I've read good reviews on that and keep bathing them and using the flea comb constantly. Stayseeliz
I called my vet and they said they won't write a prescription but they do sell comfortis and they will price patch so I found it for a decent price online. But the product info says not to use on puppies younger than 14 weeks. Our puppies are only 10 and 11 weeks. What do I do to control the fleas in the meantime?? Paige
We never had a problem with fleas on our dogs when we treated the lawn for fire ants every year. We lived in a high flea and tick area, but I think the fire ants treatment killed them all. We didn't have as much success when we lived in other areas without fire ants and just used flea treatments.

Stayseeliz
DH is going to spray the yard with the Bayer complete and hopefully that will help. I'm going to get some Frontline I guess until the dogs are old enough for Comfortis. Meanwhile I am vacuuming like crazy and they are getting daily Dawn baths. This is driving me crazy! Be very careful with the Frontline if these are young or small dogs. Some dogs have reactions to it, and this happens more with young or small dogs. http://www.vetinfo.com/side-effects-fipronil-frontline-dogs.html You might ask your vet about Capstar. It works like Comfortis, but can be used on younger dogs than Comfortis, and overdose is not as much of a concern. http://www.budgetpetcare.com/vetanswers.aspx?id=2389 You may want to look into the cedarwood oil spray for controlling fleas in the yard if you want to avoid pesticides. There are also cedarwood oil shampoo products. Brands to check for are Dr. Ben's and Ceder-AL. missmoe
My understanding of the flea treatment you used is that it will disrupt the life cycle of the fleas that do get on your dogs. So those fleas on the dog will not be able to lay eggs that hatch. So yes, your dog will pick up fleas from your yard, but will not drop eggs in your house that will hatch. When we had fleas, we were able to get rid of them without doing anything in house, but vacuuming and washing and drying things. I vacuummed three times a day for a few weeks and washed our bedding and stuffed animals.
Cammie
Ok, this is a little outside the box but I really recommend ....CHICKENS!!! I was totally overwhelmed when my dog got fleas and freaked out a bit. She spends all day in the yard and I knew that I needed that place CLEAN. So we went and got two chickens and kept them in the backyard for a couple of weeks. They spent all day just pick, pick, picking at the grass eating up fleas and whatever else they found. After a few weeks we sent them to a friends farm and I had a VERY clean backyard (except of course for the chicken poop which I had to deal with!) I would do it again, too! Paula in MS
This is what we did that worked well. We had a total flea infestation despite our dog being on frontline. It doesn't work here anymore for some reason. We bathed the dog everyday in dawn dish detergent to kill fleas, switched to comfortis, and treated the outside with over and out fire ant killer, which was recommended by our vet. We bombed the inside of the house about 3 times, and put the cats on flea medicine as well. (They had previously not had a flea problem). Once we finally made the switch to comfortis, things improved dramatically. I hated that we waited so long to switch to comfortis. We were thinking the frontline was enough, so we wore ourselves out trying to bathe the dog everyday and give him Benadryl so he (we ) could sleep. Bathing a lab everyday is not fun.:glare: Good luck.

Are you not supposed to bathe your dogs if you use a topical flea treatment? bathing them with simple shampoo would be fine but if you bath them with a stripping agent such as Dawn you then washed off/removed most of the Advantage that you had applied/. So yes, baths are fine with a normal shampoo.

Heartguard Plus, or Trifexis which is Comfortis plus a worm medicine both take care of intestinal and heartworms. I use Heartguard, but do not give both meds on the same day, it makes them too lethargic and I don't feel good about that.
