abrightmom
Can we start with Grade 5 although my son is only 4th grade with very little formal grammar under his belt? Does it require a level of proficiency with grammar? He is intuitive with English so far. I just want to know that Hake would explain the concepts well and not assume we have prior knowledge. Hope that makes sense. We are going to give KISS a whirl but I like that Hake has a workbook and covers all the areas I want including mechanics and diagraming/diagramming. Woodland Mist Academy
I think it would be fine to try Hake 5 with a fourth grader. Hake explains concepts well and provides plenty of review. KISS and Hake make a good combo. :001_smile:
abrightmom
Thanks! From the samples, it looks FINE but I can never tell until I buy it. Hake and KISS make a good combo?! Hmmmmmmmmm.
TarynB
Thanks! From the samples, it looks FINE but I can never tell until I buy it. Hake and KISS make a good combo?! Hmmmmmmmmm. I've never used KISS grammar, but my DS is using Hake and I don't see any need for an additional program to supplement it. Hake works great on its own. But I'm curious, what is it that you like about KISS to make you think of using both at the same time?
HappyGrace
Using Hake 5 with average 4th grade boy here-it's going fine! He did only one yr of grammar before this (used a GWG3/FLL3 combo last yr.) The vocab they use is a little higher level than is totally comfortable for him since he's not a reader but it is not really a problem so far. (like they might use a verb he's never heard of before but he can still figure it out that it is the verb) He really likes it and the spiral makes it easy to retain. We both love the interesting factual sentences they use. I have rave reviews for this curriculum! I would use it again next yr.
