Caroline Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 -12 3/4 divided by -2 5/6 That's negative 12 and three-fourths divided by negative 2 and five-sixths. Thanks!! Give me the steps if you can. First change everything to improper fractions. -51/4 divided by-17/6. Next you take the reciprocal of the second fraction and multiply. -51/4 x -6/17 Now you can reduce... Because 3x17=51 -3/4 x -6/1 When you multiply you get 18/4 which reduces to 9/2 which is equal to 4 1/2. Quote

Jane in NC Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 This is when I wish I had a white board with a USB. Both fractions are negative. Let's just cancel the negatives and not worry about them anymore. You first need to convert the mixed numerals to improper fractions: 12 3/4 = 51/4 2 5/6 = 17/6 So back to the problem: -12 3/4 divided by - 2 5/6 equals 51/4 divided by 17/6. Now invert and multiply: 51/4 times 6/17. Cancel so that you have 3/2 times 3/1 or 9/2 as your answer. Quote

Give me improper fractions any day. ;) Quote

Arcadia Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Negative divide by negative is a positive (-12 3/4) / (-2 5/6) = (51/4) / (17/6) = (51/4) * (6/17) = 9/2 = 4 1/2 Quote
