5th grade-No more warm fuzzies?

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling like our homeschool is a lot less warm and cuddly lately. We are doing more "work" so we have fewer hours in our day for the fun stuff. It's not awful and we certainly aren't working much past lunch time, but with soccer, girl scouts, and speech eating up our afternoons, our homeschool is feeling more like "school at home" than ever. Perhaps that's not a bad thing, but I miss the long walks, baking, and all the little extras we used to do.

I'm feeling more like a manager than a teacher these days.

Is this just a natural transition into middle school or do I need to remedy this by scheduling in the fun stuff so it actually gets done?

I feel this way too this year. My oldest is in 6th. What I am doing is working on simplifying our routine so that we are done by at least lunchtime every day. We are doing nature study for part of our science this year, so at least once a week we have an educational reason to walk. I tried to stack outside activities on to as few days as possible to give us a couple of free days at home. And I am debating having one of those free afternoons be "family project time" where we can cook something special, or make a craft, or do something seasonal. With tea of course :).

Well, I don't think that homeschoolers need to ponder the difference between "elementary school" and "middle school." It's all learning, with each year requiring more effort (for both parents and children).

So I don't think there have to be fewer warm fuzzies. :)

ITA about trying to stack outside activities on as few days as possible. :)

Yes, I agree. I think it makes sense. School gets more rigorous as one gets older, so there's just less time for the warm fuzzy stuff. It makes me kind of sad, and it also makes me treasure those things with my younger kids more. It's harder to do those things with my littles, now that I have middle schoolers, which also makes me sad.
